Sample interview questions
How would you design a reliable pipeline for exchange trade and order events using Kafka and Spark?

I would define versioned event schemas, partition topics by an appropriate stable key such as instrument or account where ordering requirements permit, and retain raw events for replay. Spark streaming would validate, deduplicate, and transform events into curated layers with checkpointing and idempotent writes. I would add lag, throughput, error-rate, freshness, and reconciliation monitoring, plus documented replay and incident-recovery procedures.

Describe how you would investigate a discrepancy between a business dashboard and the source trading system.

I would first clarify the metric definition, time window, timezone, filters, and expected grain with the stakeholder. Then I would trace lineage from the dashboard through warehouse models and transformations to the source events, comparing record counts, aggregates, late-arriving data, duplicates, and schema changes at each stage. I would identify the root cause, correct the logic or upstream process, backfill affected data where appropriate, and add a validation test or monitor to prevent recurrence.

What practices would you use to make Airflow workflows maintainable and recoverable?

I would keep DAGs modular, use clear task boundaries and reusable operators, define explicit dependencies, and store configuration separately from code. Tasks should be idempotent, have sensible retries and timeouts, support backfills safely, and emit useful logs and alerts. I would also document ownership, SLAs, upstream dependencies, and recovery steps for critical workflows.

How do you balance data freshness, reliability, and processing cost for a data platform?

I start by categorizing datasets according to business criticality and freshness requirements rather than applying the same SLA everywhere. For critical operational data, I prioritize low-latency processing, observability, and robust recovery; for analytical workloads, I use incremental processing, partitioning, compaction, and scheduled compute. I regularly measure query patterns, compute utilization, storage growth, and pipeline runtime to target optimizations without weakening data controls.

How would you communicate a technical data-quality issue to Mandarin-speaking business users?

I would explain the business impact first in clear Mandarin, including which metric or report is affected, the time period, and the current level of confidence in the data. I would avoid unnecessary implementation detail, provide a concise root-cause summary and expected resolution time, and state any recommended temporary interpretation. After resolution, I would confirm the correction, describe whether historical data was restated, and document the metric definition or safeguard.

About WOO X

WOO X is a global centralised crypto trading platform offering spot and perpetual futures trading. With roots in quantitative trading, we focus on the details that matter to traders: liquidity, execution quality, and reliable tools.

Transparency is part of the product. Our live Proof of Reserves & Liabilities dashboard gives users visibility into reported platform assets and user liabilities.

Our team is fully remote. We’re looking for people who know their craft, are curious about the business, and want a hand in improving how the exchange works.

About the role

We’re looking for a Senior Data Engineer to maintain and develop WOO X’s data platform. You’ll build the pipelines and data models that make exchange data reliable and useful for analytics, reporting, and day-to-day business decisions.

This is a hands-on individual contributor role with a focus on platform engineering. You’ll work with engineering and business colleagues to understand how data is produced and used, address quality issues, and make the platform easier to maintain as requirements evolve.

What you’ll do

  • Build and maintain batch and streaming data pipelines using Python, SQL, Kafka, and Spark.
  • Develop and operate Airflow workflows, including scheduling, dependency management, retries, and recovery.
  • Design and maintain data models and warehouse datasets for analytics and reporting.
  • Improve data quality and freshness through validation, monitoring, and investigation of upstream and downstream issues.
  • Optimise pipeline and query performance, and manage processing and storage costs.
  • Work with data users to define datasets and metrics, and document data flows, transformations, and dependencies.

What you’ll bring

  • Data engineering experience within crypto or Web3, including responsibility for production pipelines or a data platform.
  • Strong Python and SQL skills, with experience building maintainable data processing workflows.
  • Hands-on experience with Airflow, Kafka, and Spark.
  • Experience with data warehouses, ETL/ELT pipelines, and data modelling.
  • The ability to investigate data discrepancies, troubleshoot pipeline failures, and resolve underlying causes.
  • The ability to work independently and communicate technical details and business requirements clearly in Mandarin.

Nice to have

  • Experience at a centralised crypto exchange, particularly with trading, order, or account data.
  • BI experience, including supporting dashboards, defining metrics, or preparing datasets for business users.
  • Strong English communication skills.

Working with us

This role is fully remote within APAC, with Mandarin as the team’s main working language. You’ll work on a data platform connected to the daily operations of a crypto exchange and help colleagues get dependable answers from its data.

If you enjoy building data systems and understanding how people use them, we’d like to hear from you.
