Sample interview questions
How would you evaluate whether a new third-party dataset is worth incorporating into a product?

I would first define the client or business decision the dataset could improve, then assess coverage, granularity, timeliness, historical depth, consistency, and legal usability. I would validate the data against known benchmarks, quantify signal quality, identify limitations, and summarize the expected business value and implementation effort in a recommendation.

Describe how you turn an ambiguous business question into an analytical project.

I begin by clarifying the decision to be made, stakeholders, success criteria, and key assumptions. I translate the question into measurable hypotheses, identify required data and potential constraints, build an analysis plan, and communicate early findings so stakeholders can align before significant work is completed.

What is your approach to working with large datasets in SQL or PySpark?

I start with data profiling and a clear understanding of table grain, joins, and quality risks. I use efficient filtering, aggregation, partition-aware operations, and reproducible transformations, then validate outputs through reconciliation checks and sampled records before interpreting results.

How would you communicate a dataset-quality issue to both engineering and business stakeholders?

I would explain the issue in terms of its practical impact, such as incomplete coverage or a bias that could affect a client metric. For engineering, I would provide technical detail, examples, and proposed validation or remediation steps; for business stakeholders, I would focus on decision risk, timeline, and recommended next actions.

How do you use AI or LLM tools without compromising analytical rigor?

I use them to accelerate tasks such as research synthesis, code drafting, documentation, and exploratory idea generation, but I verify outputs against source data and established logic. I treat AI output as a starting point rather than evidence, maintain reproducible analyses, and apply human judgment to conclusions and recommendations.

  • Thrive in open-ended environments with high ownership and autonomy.
  • Communicate clearly and work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders or have experience partnering cross-functionally with engineering and business teams.
  • Are curious, experimental, and excited to uncover new opportunities.
