Sample interview questions
I would begin by defining the client and business decisions the taxonomy must support, then profile the available attributes and identify ambiguity patterns. I would create an initial hierarchical classification framework, validate it against representative records and domain expertise, measure accuracy, and establish an iterative review process for exceptions and new products.
I first quantify the issue, identify affected outputs and stakeholders, and trace lineage from the client-facing metric through transformations to source data. After isolating the root cause, I implement a scalable fix, add automated validation checks and monitoring, backfill affected data where appropriate, and communicate both impact and resolution clearly.
I would use version control, peer review, modular and documented code, reproducible environments, and automated tests for core transformations. I would also define data-quality checks, lineage documentation, alerting for failures or metric shifts, and clear ownership for ongoing maintenance.
I separate immediate decisions from durable platform work, define the minimum reliable output for the first release, and make assumptions explicit. I use staged validation, prioritize high-impact quality controls, and maintain a visible backlog so temporary solutions are deliberately improved rather than becoming permanent technical debt.
I would set clear quality standards and decision frameworks, delegate work with defined outcomes, and use regular reviews as teaching opportunities. I would reserve direct involvement for ambiguous or high-risk decisions while giving analysts increasing ownership, actionable feedback, and context on how their work affects clients and business goals.
