The role, at a glance.
This senior commissioning role leads and supports delivery of mission-critical data center projects from pre-design through turnover. The engineer coordinates commissioning plans, schedules, test scripts, vendors, contractors, and operational stakeholders while tracking issues and readiness documentation. Core technical scope covers electrical distribution, UPS and generator systems, mechanical cooling infrastructure, BMS/EPMS controls, security, and integrated systems testing. The position requires three to five years of commissioning experience in data centers or similarly critical environments, strong documentation skills, and domestic travel across the United States and Canada. Success depends on balancing safety, quality, schedule, and operational reliability in an active construction environment.

Sample interview questions
I begin by confirming the owner’s project requirements, basis of design, risk profile, and commissioning scope. I build a phased plan covering design reviews, submittal reviews, pre-functional checks, startup, functional testing, integrated systems testing, issue tracking, training, and final turnover documentation. Throughout the project, I maintain clear readiness gates and coordinate closely with the owner, design team, contractors, vendors, and operations personnel.
I first validate that component-level startup and functional tests are complete and that all safety controls, sequences, and monitoring points have been verified. I then develop scenario-based scripts that simulate realistic utility and equipment failures, define expected system responses, assign responsibilities, establish communications protocols, and document acceptance criteria. After testing, I capture deficiencies, assign owners and due dates, retest corrective actions, and provide a complete record for operations.
I verify that the script aligns with the design intent, equipment submittals, operating sequences, and owner requirements. I ensure it includes measurable pass/fail criteria, prerequisites, safety precautions, test instrumentation, expected alarms, redundancy behavior, and recovery steps. I also look for coverage of abnormal operating conditions and coordination between mechanical, electrical, and controls systems.
On a critical project, I would structure the response by documenting the observed condition, isolating affected systems, reviewing drawings and control logic, and convening the appropriate vendor, contractor, engineer, and operations representatives. I would lead the team toward a root-cause-based corrective action, verify the fix through retesting, and update the issue log and turnover records. Clear ownership, factual communication, and timely escalation are essential to protecting schedule and reliability.
I treat safety and quality prerequisites as non-negotiable gates rather than tasks to compress. I use detailed readiness checklists, daily coordination, documented permits and lockout/tagout practices where applicable, and transparent reporting of risks and deficiencies. By identifying constraints early and aligning test windows with contractors and vendors, I can protect project milestones without accepting unsafe or incomplete work.
