AI Summary

The role, at a glance.

Enode is hiring a senior design engineer to bridge product design and front-end implementation for its energy-management platform, customer connection flows, and website. The role combines production UI development, rapid code prototyping, design-system stewardship, and collaboration on API usability. Candidates need deep React, TypeScript, HTML, CSS, accessibility, and interface-craft expertise, plus a portfolio showing both designed and shipped work. This is a remote-first European position with substantial ownership and an expectation of strong written communication and practical AI fluency. The work supports software used by energy retailers to connect and orchestrate EVs, heat pumps, and home batteries.

Sample interview questions
Describe a project where you owned both the interface design and its front-end implementation.

I would explain the product problem, show how I moved from research or rough concepts into prototypes, and describe how I implemented the final interface. I would also cover measurable outcomes, accessibility decisions, and what I changed after user or engineering feedback.

How do you keep a design system in Figma and a component library in code aligned?

I treat both as parts of one product system, with shared naming, tokens, component states, and documentation. I establish a regular review process with designers and engineers, make code the source of truth for production behavior, and address drift through small, continuous updates rather than large migrations.

How would you approach designing an API-facing workflow for developers integrating Enode's platform?

I would first understand the integration goals, developer journey, data model, error cases, and debugging needs. Then I would prototype the flow with realistic API data, prioritize clear states and actionable errors, and validate the experience with developers before refining the UI and supporting documentation.

What accessibility checks do you apply before shipping a complex interactive UI?

I verify semantic structure, keyboard navigation, visible focus states, screen-reader labels and announcements, color contrast, responsive behavior, and motion preferences. I combine automated checks with manual testing because interaction quality and contextual usability cannot be fully captured by automated tools.

How do you use AI in your design and engineering workflow while preserving quality?

I use AI to accelerate exploration, prototype alternatives, generate test cases, and reduce repetitive implementation work. I still validate outputs against product requirements, accessibility standards, security considerations, and design-system conventions, because judgment and craft remain essential.

About this role.

About Enode

The grid was built for predictable, centralised power. Today it’s absorbing intermittent supply from grid scale solar and wind, alongside dynamic demand from EVs, heat pumps, and home batteries. The missing piece is software that can connect and orchestrate these devices at scale.

We’re the layer between the home and the grid. Our platform connects every asset, coordinates every home and shapes thousands as one. Asset connectivity gives energy retailers one API for 1,000+ device models across 100+ brands. Home energy coordination turns that connection into smarter behavior at home, like charging an EV in the cheapest hours or using more of your own solar. Residential flexibility brings connected homes together into a dispatchable resource the grid can count on.

Europe’s largest energy companies build on Enode: retailers, utilities and the teams that trade for them. The platform spans 1.7M+ connected households and 5,000+ MW of controllable load. We’re backed by Y Combinator, Lowercarbon Capital and Creandum.

The decisions made now will shape how the next grid gets built. We’re looking for people who take ownership, think clearly under complexity and care deeply about the craft of building software that matters.

AI is fundamental to how we work

AI is how a team our size keeps rewiring the way we work, fast enough to match what our mission demands. We look for people who reach for AI as a reflex and who can drop a habit that used to work. People who care about unblocking others, not just about what they ship themselves. If that’s not quite how you work yet but it’s the direction you’re heading, we’d still like to hear from you. We assess this in our interview process, alongside everything else we look at.

The role

The design team at Enode ships. We’re looking for a Senior Design Engineer who’s as comfortable in a codebase as they are in Figma, and who closes the gap between the two.

You’ll build the interfaces energy retailers and their developers use: the Enode Platform, where they integrate and debug; Link UI, the flow their customers go through when they connect a car or a heat pump; and the website that tells our story. You’ll turn designs into production-ready code, prototype ideas before they become designs, and help look after the design system that keeps all of it consistent.

The team

You’ll report to Daniël, our Head of Design, and join a small, senior design team that works across product and brand. You’ll have real ownership: what you build goes live.

How we work

Day to day, each designer works mostly with their own team of engineers, often alongside a product manager. Every Monday, the designers get together to sync and share their work. We team up on projects when it makes sense, and jump on a quick huddle whenever someone wants feedback.

AI is part of how we work every day. We use it to prototype, explore and build our own tools, so a few people can do a lot. But the craft still matters most, so we care just as much about knowing where it falls short. You’ll help shape how we use it as a team.

What you’ll do

  • Build and ship production UI for the Platform, Link UI and the website, working directly in our codebases.

  • Contribute heavily to the design system in code, together with our front-end engineers: components, tokens and documentation, kept in sync with Figma, Claude and other tooling.

  • Prototype in code to test ideas quickly with customers and the team, before anyone commits to a direction.

  • Raise the quality bar for interaction, motion, accessibility and performance across everything we ship.

  • Work with engineering on how front-end work gets built, reviewed and released, so design and code don’t drift apart.

  • Help our engineering teams design APIs and changes to them, so what developers build on is clear and easy to use.

  • Build tools and prototypes that help design and engineering work together, and help shape how we use AI as a team.

This role is right for you if

You care about the last 10% of an interface: the timing of a transition, the edge case in an empty state, the spacing that’s 2px off. You also care about the energy transition, and you want your work to help people choose electric. We’re looking for:

  • 5+ years building user interfaces, in a design engineering, front-end or design-focused engineering role.

  • Deep knowledge of React and TypeScript, and a strong understanding of HTML, CSS and accessibility.

  • A solid understanding of APIs: you’re comfortable reading the docs and building on real data, you understand what developers need from them, and you have a view on how they should be designed.

  • A portfolio that shows both: things you designed, and things you built.

  • You’ve spent the past year using AI in your design and engineering work, and pushing how far it can go. You have a clear view on where it helps and where it doesn’t.

  • Experience contributing to a design system that people actually use.

  • Comfort working on your own: you can take a rough idea to a shipped feature without a detailed spec.

  • Clear communication with designers and engineers alike. You can explain a design decision to an engineer, a technical constraint to a designer, and you keep the overarching story in mind.

  • Excellent written communication: we are remote-first, so writing well is key.

What we offer:

  • Opportunity to join and impact an early-stage climate tech startup with global aspirations as we scale.

  • A mission-driven, fun and caring environment with high drive and ambition.

  • Competitive compensation, including a very attractive employee option program – you’re part of our journey.

  • Access to best in class AI tooling, we think the ceiling on what a small team can do has fundamentally shifted, and we want you to feel that.

  • Real investment in your AI fluency. Dedicated time to build the skill, an internal skills library you can contribute to, and the tooling budget to work properly.

  • Remote-first in Europe, with the option of attending an office in Oslo or receiving a co-working pass on demand.

  • Three annual off-sites to connect with the team in exciting & fun places.

  • Flexible, human-first culture.

  • Stipend for setting up your home office.

A few things to note:

  • Enode is an equal opportunities employer. Don’t meet every single requirement? Studies have shown that women and people of colour are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. We are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive and authentic workplace, so if you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may just be the right candidate for this or other roles.
