Sample interview questions
How have you improved renewal rates across a portfolio or team?

I start by segmenting the portfolio by renewal risk, value, product adoption, and timing. I establish clear operating metrics and account-review cadences, then coach representatives on targeted success plans, executive alignment, and early escalation management. I monitor results by segment and refine playbooks based on loss reasons and successful retention patterns.

Describe your approach to coaching Renewal Representatives on complex negotiations.

I coach representatives to understand the customer's business objectives, adoption challenges, decision process, and alternatives before discussing commercial terms. We prepare a negotiation plan with value evidence, acceptable trade-offs, stakeholder mapping, and escalation triggers. After each major negotiation, I conduct a structured debrief to reinforce effective behaviors and identify development opportunities.

How would you manage a high-value renewal that is at risk of churn?

I would quickly validate the churn drivers, contract timeline, executive stakeholders, product usage, and commercial history. I would align a cross-functional recovery plan with Customer Success, Sales, and Finance, ensuring the customer receives a clear path to value and that internal owners have specific actions and deadlines. If needed, I would lead executive discussions directly while protecting long-term customer value and margin.

Which KPIs would you use to evaluate a renewals team?

I would track gross and net renewal rate, churn and contraction, expansion contribution, forecast accuracy, on-time renewal execution, at-risk coverage, cycle time, and pipeline hygiene. I would also review leading indicators such as product adoption, customer health, executive engagement, and renewal-plan completion. These measures provide both outcome accountability and early warning signals.

How do you implement a scalable renewal-process improvement?

I first define the problem using workflow data, stakeholder feedback, and measurable business impact. I then map the current process, identify root causes, pilot a focused solution, and document ownership, enablement, and success metrics. After validating results, I roll out the process with training and regular reporting so adoption and performance remain sustainable.
