Sample interview questions
I begin by revisiting the original finding, root cause, regulatory expectation, and agreed action plan. I assess objective evidence of implementation, test whether the control operates effectively in practice, and confirm that the remediation addresses the underlying gap rather than only its symptoms. I document the rationale, residual risks, and any follow-up actions before recommending closure.
I would establish a centralized issue register with clear owners, milestones, risk ratings, evidence requirements, and escalation triggers. I would run regular status reviews with accountable leaders, challenge delayed or insufficient updates, and provide concise management reporting on progress, blockers, and residual exposure. This creates transparent ownership while allowing leadership to prioritize high-risk matters.
I use a disciplined, transparent approach built on accurate information, clear governance, and timely responses. I coordinate subject-matter experts, maintain an auditable record of requests and submissions, quality-review external-facing materials, and escalate material issues early. My aim is to ensure the organization presents a consistent, evidence-based response while maintaining a constructive regulatory relationship.
I would explain the closure criteria and identify the specific evidence or testing gap in a constructive manner. If the team cannot demonstrate that the root cause has been addressed, I would not support closure and would agree a revised remediation plan with clear deliverables and dates. Where necessary, I would escalate the residual risk through the established governance process.
Financial-crime frameworks involve high regulatory expectations around governance, customer due diligence, sanctions, transaction monitoring, and suspicious activity controls. Subject-matter knowledge enables an audit manager to assess whether remediation is substantively effective, challenge weak control design, and communicate regulatory risk clearly to both compliance specialists and senior stakeholders.
