Sample interview questions
I would define the assessment scope, regulatory obligations, risk taxonomy, inherent-risk criteria, and scoring methodology first. I would gather data from product, customer, geographic, channel, transaction, and control owners; test the design and operating effectiveness of key controls; then determine residual risk, actions, owners, and deadlines. I would validate results with regional and central compliance stakeholders and provide a concise senior-management report.
I would engage product, legal, compliance, operations, and technology teams early to map the product lifecycle, target users, jurisdictions, transaction flows, and third-party dependencies. I would identify applicable AML, sanctions, consumer-protection, market-abuse, and regulatory-perimeter risks, assess existing controls and gaps, and document required mitigations before launch. The output would include clear risk acceptance criteria, accountable owners, and ongoing monitoring metrics.
I focus on a small set of decision-useful measures, such as residual-risk movements, overdue remediation actions, control-effectiveness trends, and KRIs against approved risk appetite. I segment results by business line, jurisdiction, product, and risk type so management can prioritize action. I pair the metrics with a clear narrative on drivers, impact, recommended decisions, and escalation needs.
SQL and Python can automate data extraction, quality checks, KRI calculations, control-inventory analysis, and repeatable reporting. Generative AI can assist with summarizing regulatory updates, classifying policy requirements, drafting first-pass assessment documentation, and identifying inconsistencies, provided outputs are validated by compliance professionals. I would use governed data sources, access controls, human review, testing, and audit trails to manage model risk.
I would first understand the stakeholder's evidence, operational context, and proposed mitigants. I would explain the methodology, regulatory basis, and specific drivers of the rating in transparent, factual terms, then reassess the conclusion if credible new evidence affects inherent risk or control effectiveness. If disagreement remained, I would document the rationale and escalate through the established risk-governance process for an accountable decision.
