Sample interview questions
Describe your experience managing a regulatory investigation involving a U.S. financial regulator.

I would explain the investigation's scope, preservation and collection process, fact development, regulator communications, and how I coordinated legal, compliance, and business teams. I would also highlight how I maintained privilege, tracked deadlines, and translated findings into remediation actions.

How would you assess whether an AML control gap creates material regulatory risk?

I would map the control against applicable legal and regulatory expectations, assess the affected products, customers, jurisdictions, transaction volumes, and duration of the gap, and determine whether suspicious activity reporting or other obligations may be implicated. I would then prioritize containment, document the analysis, and establish a remediation plan with accountable owners and milestones.

How do FinCEN, OFAC, the SEC, and CFTC differ in ways that matter to a crypto business?

FinCEN principally addresses Bank Secrecy Act and AML obligations, while OFAC administers economic sanctions. The SEC and CFTC may assert jurisdiction depending on the characteristics of a digital asset, product, or trading activity; therefore, a crypto business needs coordinated analysis of registration, market conduct, disclosure, AML, and sanctions obligations.

Give an example of explaining a complex legal issue to non-legal stakeholders.

I would begin with the business objective and a concise description of the legal risk, then provide clear options, recommended actions, ownership, and deadlines. I avoid legal jargon where possible and confirm understanding through written follow-up materials that stakeholders can use operationally.

How would you manage a large remediation workstream following a compliance review or enforcement matter?

I would establish a detailed work plan with defined findings, risk ratings, owners, dependencies, evidence requirements, milestones, and executive reporting. I would hold regular cross-functional reviews, escalate blockers early, validate completion through testing or documentation, and maintain a defensible record of remediation decisions.
