Sample interview questions
I would first assess the device architecture, threat model, update strategy, operational ownership, and regulatory requirements. I would then propose a phased design using a hardened OS, controlled software packaging, secure boot where appropriate, reliable over-the-air updates, observability, and clear fleet-management processes. Throughout delivery, I would align technical milestones with measurable business outcomes such as reduced field-service risk and faster release cycles.
I establish clear engagement models, capacity planning, technical quality standards, and escalation paths so customer commitments remain realistic. I coach team members on discovery, architecture communication, and delivery discipline while protecting time for learning and reusable technical assets. I also track team health, customer outcomes, utilization, and feedback to continuously improve operations.
I would understand the business reason behind the request before explaining the operational, security, and lifecycle risks in concrete terms. I would offer practical alternatives, including supported packages, isolation approaches, or a scoped validation path where feasible. The goal is to remain a trusted advisor by balancing customer constraints with a clear recommendation that protects long-term maintainability.
Yocto is often selected when teams need highly customized images and tightly controlled build systems for specific hardware, while Ubuntu-based solutions can accelerate development through familiar packages, security maintenance, and an established developer ecosystem. I would evaluate hardware constraints, update requirements, team skills, compliance needs, time to market, and the expected device lifecycle. The recommendation should follow the customer's operational model rather than a one-size-fits-all preference.
I would define explicit goals, ownership, decision records, and predictable communication rhythms that prioritize asynchronous collaboration. Regular one-to-ones, technical reviews, and outcome-focused planning help surface blockers without relying on constant meetings. I would also create opportunities for mentoring and recognize contributions publicly so engineers remain connected to team and company goals.
