The role, at a glance.
Kong is seeking a Senior Staff Product Manager to own the commercial operating layer for Konnect, including entitlements, usage metering, invoicing, checkout, provisioning, and marketplace billing. The role leads a multi-year transformation from manual billing and fulfillment processes to scalable, automated product capabilities. It partners closely with Engineering, Finance, Sales, GTM, Product Growth, and Pricing & Packaging to translate monetization strategy into reliable customer and revenue operations. The successful candidate will bring deep SaaS billing and consumption-based monetization experience, strong technical product judgment, and the ability to use data to drive platform priorities. This is a senior individual-contributor product leadership position with broad cross-functional influence and accountability for financial-grade accuracy.

Sample interview questions
I would begin by defining a canonical entitlement schema with clear ownership, versioning, effective dates, and audit trails. I would map every sales SKU and contract term to this model, expose it through shared services or APIs, and establish reconciliation controls between CPQ, provisioning, product enforcement, and invoicing. I would phase adoption through high-value plans first while preserving migration and grandfathering logic for existing customers.
I would align on commercial goals and customer segments, model expected revenue and behavioral effects, and translate the approved structure into plans, meters, and entitlement rules. Before launch, I would define grandfathering, migration paths, communication plans, sales enablement, and a rollback strategy. After release, I would monitor adoption, invoice accuracy, disputes, churn signals, and revenue impact against predefined success metrics.
I would define event contracts, idempotency rules, late-arrival handling, aggregation windows, and immutable raw-event retention. The platform should support traceability from an invoice line item back to source events, alongside automated reconciliation, anomaly detection, and clear correction workflows. I would also establish service-level objectives for data freshness, completeness, and billing-close readiness.
I would use a transparent prioritization framework that weighs revenue risk, customer impact, compliance or financial-control needs, strategic pricing commitments, operational cost, and engineering dependencies. I would separate urgent correctness issues from scalable platform investments and maintain a roadmap that connects each initiative to measurable outcomes. Regular stakeholder reviews would ensure tradeoffs are understood and decisions remain aligned with company goals.
I would evaluate the capability against differentiation, time to market, operational reliability, total cost of ownership, integration complexity, data ownership, and the vendor's ability to support our pricing roadmap. Commodity payment and invoicing functions are often good vendor candidates, while domain-specific entitlement and product-access logic may warrant internal ownership. I would validate the decision through architecture reviews, proof-of-concepts, and clear exit or fallback plans.
About this role.
Are you ready to unlock intelligence?
If you don’t think you meet all of the criteria below but are still interested in the job, please apply. Nobody checks every box – we’re looking for candidates that are particularly strong in a few areas, and have some interest and capabilities in others.
The Mission:
Kong is building the future of AI connectivity, empowering developers to connect, secure, and scale their applications with speed and intelligence. We are hiring a Product Manager, Billing to lead the product and systems work behind how Konnect makes money: entitlements, metering, checkout, invoicing, provisioning, and the enterprise and marketplace motions that surround them.
In this role you are the product owner of Konnect’s commercial operating layer: the systems that translate what Sales sells and what customers use into what ends up on an invoice. That means plan and entitlement design, the usage metering pipeline, self-serve checkout and subscription lifecycle, customer organization and billing admin experiences, enterprise billing workflows (CPQ sync, custom contracts), and cloud marketplace billing. You will work hand-in-hand with Product Growth, Pricing & Packaging, Finance, GTM, Sales, and Engineering.
This role reports to the Sr Director, Product (Platform) and sits at the intersection of two multi-year transformations: Kong’s move from a single-product API gateway company into a multi-product enterprise, and Monetization’s company-wide overhaul of pricing and packaging. The Billing, Provisioning, and Fulfillment program has historically been manual and relationship-driven. Your job is to turn it into a product, so Sales can sell more, Finance can bill more accurately, and customers get an experience that matches the quality of what they are paying for.
What You’ll Do:
Platform Vision: Set a multi-year direction for how Konnect prices, meters, entitles, and invoices. Decide what becomes shared platform capability versus what stays feature-specific, and sequence delivery so near-term work lands without creating long-term drag.
Unified Entitlements: Build the entitlements model that determines what every customer can access within Konnect. Make entitlements a first-class concept that is consistently defined in contracts, enforced in-product, honored by provisioning, and reflected in billing.
Pricing & Packaging Delivery: Act as the product and systems counterpart to Monetization. Translate pricing and packaging decisions into production reality: configuring plans, reshaping metering, updating contracts, coordinating customer migrations, and making sure a rollout doesn’t disrupt existing revenue.
Metering & Usage Visibility: Run the event pipeline, aggregation layer, and reporting experiences that show customers what they consumed and what they are being charged. Hold a financial-grade bar on accuracy, auditability, and reconcilability.
Checkout & Subscription Lifecycle: Own how customers self-serve onto a plan, change plans, renew, lapse, and recover. That covers plan discovery, checkout, the underlying payments integration, subscription state, retries and dunning, and the admin surfaces where customers manage their own billing.
Enterprise & Marketplace Motions: Connect Kong’s enterprise sales and channel motions to the billing stack: CPQ-to-entitlement sync, bespoke contract handling, invoice-based billing, and marketplace billing across AWS, GCP, and Azure as we expand our presence there.
Fulfillment Automation: Replace today’s manual, high-touch provisioning and fulfillment processes with productized, automated workflows. This includes migrating off our current metering and billing system onto a target stack that supports the new pricing and packaging framework.
Outcomes & Measurement: Define the health metrics for the domain, including net revenue retention, billing-driven churn, invoice dispute rate, collections aging, and billing support ticket load. Use them to set priorities and hold the team accountable for results.
What You’ll Bring:
Have at least 6 years of product management experience in SaaS, with 2 or more spent directly in a billing, monetization, or pricing domain.
Can reason about the moving parts of a billing stack well enough to co-design the architecture with your engineering partner.
Have carried a pricing or packaging change from proposal through to production, including financial modeling, plan configuration, grandfathering logic, migrations, sales enablement, and customer communication.
Have built or scaled consumption-based monetization and understand the tradeoffs between simplicity, accuracy, and customer trust when metering drives the invoice.
Pull your own numbers when you need them (SQL, Snowflake, Hex, or equivalent) and use data to set priorities rather than to decorate decisions already made.
Have worked directly with Stripe or a metered billing platform (Metronome, Orb, OpenMeter), not through an engineer.
Hold billing surfaces (plan pages, checkouts, invoices, usage dashboards) to the same design standard as the rest of the product.
Have worked in or adjacent to API, infrastructure, or developer-platform products, and are comfortable with the technical context that comes with that territory.
Independently define and execute the long-term vision to bring billing, fulfillment, and provisioning to best-in-class for the company’s success.
Bonus Points:
Experience leading an end-to-end pricing transformation or building a billing system from scratch.
Shipped cloud marketplace integrations (AWS, GCP, Azure) or Salesforce CPQ-to-billing integrations.
Proficiency using LLMs and coding agents as part of your day-to-day product management workflow.
