Sample interview questions
Describe a time you redesigned an AML governance framework across multiple jurisdictions.

I began with an obligation and control-gap assessment, defined global minimum standards, and documented where local requirements needed stricter controls. I then established clear ownership, governance forums, escalation routes, and testing metrics, while working with regional teams to ensure the model was practical and locally compliant.

How would you prioritize remediation findings arising from a regulatory review?

I would assess each finding by regulatory severity, customer and financial-crime exposure, control failure scope, and implementation dependency. I would assign accountable owners and target dates, build a risk-based remediation plan, report progress through governance forums, and escalate overdue or high-risk issues promptly.

How do you balance global standardization with local compliance autonomy?

I set non-negotiable global control baselines informed by applicable AML/CFT standards, then allow local teams to add requirements needed for their jurisdiction. Regular working groups, documented exceptions, and transparent risk acceptance processes help ensure consistency without disregarding local regulatory realities.

What information should effective board-level financial-crime reporting include?

It should summarize material financial-crime risks, regulatory developments, significant investigations, SAR/STR trends, key control metrics, audit or assurance findings, remediation status, and decisions requiring board oversight. The reporting should be concise, evidence-based, and clear about residual risk and accountable actions.

How would you assess the effectiveness of transaction-monitoring controls?

I would evaluate scenario coverage against the business risk assessment and known typologies, then review alert quality, investigation timeliness, escalation outcomes, and SAR/STR conversion patterns. I would also conduct periodic tuning reviews, independent testing, and root-cause analysis of material misses or false-positive volumes.
