Sample interview questions
I would begin by identifying business objectives, current data workflows, key stakeholders, decision criteria, constraints, and success measures. I would then map the existing warehouse, transformation, orchestration, BI, and governance landscape, document risks and dependencies, and align a phased technical evaluation plan with the account team's commercial strategy.
I separate the minimum viable path to value from the target-state architecture. I propose phased recommendations that solve the highest-priority problem first while documenting governance, maintainability, performance, and adoption considerations needed for future scale.
For engineers, I would use a realistic workflow to show modular transformations, testing, documentation, lineage, and deployment practices. For executives, I would connect those capabilities to trusted data, faster delivery, reduced operational risk, governance, and measurable business outcomes.
I maintain an explicit risk register covering architecture fit, data access, security, stakeholder alignment, adoption readiness, integrations, and evaluation timelines. I review risks with the account team regularly, assign owners and mitigation actions, and communicate status clearly enough to improve forecast accuracy.
I would create repeatable discovery frameworks, reference architectures, demo environments, proof-of-value templates, integration guides, objection-handling materials, and technical win plans. I would validate these assets with peers and make them easy to adapt across industries and account sizes.

About The Role
A Staff Solutions Architect is a senior pre-sales technical leader who partners with sales, customers, partners, and internal stakeholders to shape technical strategy, design strong dbt-centered solutions, and convert technical progress into predictable commercial outcomes. The role includes the full Senior Solutions Architect foundation and adds broader scope, deeper architectural leadership, stronger influence across complex accounts, and greater contribution to reusable patterns, enablement, and field standards.
This role is well suited to someone who enjoys creating opportunities as much as closing them. You’ll play a hands-on role in outbound prospecting, shaping your own pipeline and guiding customers through thoughtful, consultative sales conversations. This is a high-ownership role with significant autonomy and responsibility from day one.
What you’ll do:
- Lead technical discovery to understand business drivers, technical context, constraints, decision process, and success criteria.
- Run product demonstrations, workshops, evaluations, and proof-oriented engagements that map dbt capabilities to real customer problems.
- Design pragmatic solution architectures spanning dbt, warehouses, orchestration, BI, governance, and adjacent ecosystem tooling.
- Partner closely with account teams on qualification, technical win criteria, risks, next steps, and forecast accuracy.
- Act as a trusted technical advisor for analytics engineers, data engineers, architects, and technical decision-makers.
- Communicate complex topics clearly in both written and verbal form, adapting depth and framing to the audience.
- Support customer adoption and expansion by connecting technical outcomes to additional use cases and long-term platform value.
- Model dbt values through professionalism, curiosity, accountability, collaboration, and a growth mindset.
What differentiates a Staff Solutions Architect:
In addition to the responsibilities above, a Staff Solutions Architect is expected to:
- Consistently frame strong early technical angles that improve pipeline quality and qualification.
- Uncover root causes, decision processes, and hidden constraints in varied and often complex customer situations.
- Use the sales process deliberately to structure technical work, maintain clear status, and provide actionable risk assessments.
- Engage as a credible peer on design, performance, maintainability, and architecture trade-offs across the modern data stack.
- Deliver well-phased architectures that reflect organizational complexity, adoption realities, governance needs, and long-term evolution.
- Design strong integration approaches across multiple warehouses, orchestrators, BI tools, and partner technologies.
- Equip champions with compelling narratives, proof points, and technical materials that help advance initiatives internally.
- Maintain a complete and comprehensible view of deals, workload, and technical milestones that improves forecasting quality.
- Generate reusable demos, templates, write-ups, patterns, and assets that other SAs can adopt and adapt.
- Build strong cross-functional partnerships across sales, product, marketing, success, partners, and the broader SA organization.
- Influence how dbt-centric architecture patterns are defined, scaled, and reused beyond a single account or territory.
Skills we’re looking for:
A strong candidate for this role will typically bring:
- Experience in pre-sales, solutions architecture, sales engineering, or a comparable customer-facing technical role.
- Strong understanding of dbt, analytics engineering, SQL, data transformation, and modern cloud data platforms.
- Ability to lead technical strategy in complex enterprise opportunities with multiple stakeholders and moving parts.
- Comfort navigating ambiguity, balancing short-term deal support with long-term architectural quality, and operating in a fast-changing environment.
- Evidence of mentoring, force-multiplying peers, or creating assets and practices that improve team effectiveness.
- Strong executive communication, technical storytelling, and written documentation skills.
