Sample interview questions
I would first confirm the scope and customer impact through dashboards, alerts, and recent deployment records. I would compare application, infrastructure, database, and network metrics before and after the release, inspect relevant logs, and determine whether rollback or mitigation is needed. After stabilizing the service, I would document the root cause and implement monitoring or deployment safeguards.
I would define the required infrastructure and configuration as code, store it in version control, and build a CI/CD pipeline with validation, testing, approval controls where needed, and deployment stages. I would use idempotent automation tools such as Ansible or CloudFormation and include rollback procedures. Monitoring and post-deployment checks would verify that the release is healthy.
Key practices include eliminating single points of failure, using load balancing and redundant components, monitoring service health, testing backup and recovery processes, and planning capacity before demand exceeds limits. I would also use clear incident runbooks, controlled releases, and regular reviews of reliability risks.
Docker packages applications and their dependencies consistently, reducing environment differences between development and production. Kubernetes manages scheduling, scaling, service discovery, health checks, and recovery for containerized workloads. Together they make deployments more repeatable and improve operational visibility, though they require strong monitoring and configuration discipline.
I would prioritize based on customer impact, service severity, and risk to availability. A production incident affecting customers takes precedence over planned work, while low-severity alerts should be validated to avoid unnecessary disruption. I would communicate status early, delegate where possible, and reschedule maintenance through the appropriate change process once the environment is stable.
