About this role.
Music Expression builds the tools artists use to show who they are on Spotify and to connect with fans. A song doesn’t have to be just a track in a list. On Spotify it can come with a looping Canvas visual, a music video, a vertical-video clip from the artist, or a countdown to a new release. Release day can become a shared Listening Party. Every one of those things was built by this org. Each squad owns part of the artist-to-fan journey.
The work runs from video pipelines and serving infrastructure through mobile and web clients to rights systems, so engineers get real depth and range. Product, design, data science, research and product marketing work inside the squads, and they work directly with artists and labels. What you ship changes how artists show up on Spotify and how fans experience their music. If you want to work where technology meets creativity and culture, this is the place.
If this role excites you but you don’t meet every requirement, we’d still love to hear from you. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds.

Sample interview questions
I would begin by clarifying access patterns, consistency needs, latency targets, and ownership boundaries. I would design a stateless Java service behind load balancing, use durable storage appropriate to the metadata model, add caching for high-read paths, and expose versioned APIs. I would also include observability, load testing, graceful degradation, and a rollout plan that protects existing clients.
I define the user outcome and API contract early, including data shapes, error handling, and compatibility expectations. I implement backend capabilities behind feature flags where useful, build typed frontend integration around the contract, and test the flow at unit, integration, and end-to-end levels. I coordinate release sequencing so clients can safely handle both old and new server behavior.
I would first use metrics and traces to identify whether latency comes from database access, downstream calls, serialization, or inefficient client usage. I would simplify the contract where possible, reduce over-fetching, introduce caching or batching selectively, and set clear performance objectives. Documentation, examples, ownership, and deprecation policies are also important for improving developer experience.
I would align the group on the customer hypothesis, success metrics, technical constraints, and privacy or rights considerations before implementation. I would help break the work into measurable increments, ensure instrumentation is designed into the feature, and communicate trade-offs clearly. After launch, I would review qualitative feedback and experiment data with the team to decide whether to iterate, scale, or retire the feature.
I use regular pairing, constructive code reviews, design discussions, and context-sharing rather than reserving mentorship for formal meetings. I tailor support to the engineer's goals, give ownership of appropriately scoped work, and make expectations explicit. This builds capability while keeping work visible and progressing through frequent feedback.
