Sample interview questions
I would begin by identifying the student's substantive interests, intended audience, and available evidence. I would then narrow the scope by defining a jurisdiction, population, period, or legal issue, and test whether the question is answerable within the program timeline and available sources.
I use structured feedback that identifies strengths, asks targeted questions, and prioritizes the highest-impact revisions. I explain the reasoning behind recommendations and provide examples of approaches or resources, while ensuring the student remains responsible for the analysis and writing.
I explain research design through the connection between a question, evidence, method, and conclusion. I introduce appropriate qualitative, doctrinal, comparative, or basic quantitative approaches in accessible language and use short checkpoints to confirm the student can apply each concept.
I would identify the specific bottleneck, reassess the project scope, and create a revised plan with smaller deliverables and clear dates. I would maintain regular check-ins and focus the student on the minimum viable research steps needed to achieve a credible final outcome.
I would evaluate clarity and feasibility of the research question, quality and relevance of sources, methodological fit, accuracy of analysis, logical organization, citation practices, and the extent to which conclusions are supported by the evidence. I would also calibrate expectations to the student's academic level and the agreed project scope.
