Opportunity details

About this role.

Overview:

We’re on a mission to modernize insurance, making it simpler, more accessible, and customer-first. The insurance industry is a $1T market that has remained largely untouched by the digital revolution, and PolicyMe is here to change that. As a remote-first, Toronto-based startup with big ambitions, we’re looking for a Business Development Representative to help us build the future of insurance in Canada and beyond.

About This Role:

As a Business Development Representative (BDR), you’ll be at the heart of PolicyMe’s growth engine. You’ll manage a mix of inbound and outbound engagement, connecting with people who’ve already shown interest, from quote requests, started applications, to approved clients and helping move them forward in their insurance journey.

You’ll do initial outreach on inbound deals, convert incomplete applications into completed policies, and re-engage stale portions of the funnel. You’ll also qualify new clients, pack advisor calendars with high-quality meetings, and help optimize conversion throughout the funnel.

This is an established role within our Business Development team, where you’ll help scale a proven function and extend its impact. You’ll support ongoing experiments, refine strategies, and codify best practices to drive efficiency and results. Your insights and feedback will directly shape how we optimize lead conversion, outreach, and engagement at scale.

Success in this role requires curiosity, urgency, and a growth mindset. You’ll adapt your approach based on client feedback and data, continuously learning and improving how you connect with leads.

Top performers in this role will have the opportunity to pursue licensing and grow into a licensed Insurance Advisor position.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Engage and qualify inbound leads through phone calls, emails, and text to understand their needs, determine fit, book meetings and move them toward a sale.
  • Operate with urgency to contact new leads quickly, follow up consistently, and manage a high volume of quality outreach.
  • Own outreach to inbound and warm outbound segments. You will contact clients who’ve requested quotes, started applications, or been approved.
  • Convert incomplete applications into active opportunities and help clients finish their purchase journey by scheduling meetings or transferring to an advisor.
  • Re-engage stalled or unresponsive leads to keep the pipeline healthy and full.
  • Keep your CRM (HubSpot) organized and up-to-date with detailed notes, ensuring seamless handoffs and visibility.
  • Work closely with the Advisor and Operations teams to optimize lead nurturing strategies and conversion processes.
  • Meet or exceed monthly conversion and engagement targets.
  • Represent PolicyMe in a professional and client-centric manner.
  • Analyze data to identify trends and suggest improvements to outreach strategies.

What we’re looking for:

  • Experience or strong interest in sales, business develop or client facing roles. (This role is open to new & recent grads!)
  • A bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, economics, finance or any STEM field
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to connect quickly and adapt your approach.
  • Tech savvy and adaptable, comfortable learning new systems and making adjustments based on data and feedback.
  • Experience in engaging inbound or outbound leads is considered an asset.
  • Comfortable working in a CRM (we use HubSpot) and managing detailed follow ups.
  • Self motivated, results driven, and able to take ownership of your performance.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to balance volume and quality.
  • A strong desire to grow from a BDR into an Advisory role – we’re looking for ambitious, high-potential individuals eager to expand their impact.
  • A genuine growth mindset; you seek feedback and are always looking to get better.
  • Extracurricular activities or athletics during your University period is considered an asset.
  • Bilingual in English & French is considered a great asset, but not required.

Core skills

Skills and capabilities most closely associated with this opportunity.

Sample interview questions
How would you prioritize a new quote request, an incomplete application, and a previously unresponsive lead?

I would contact the new quote request first because speed-to-lead is critical, then follow up with the incomplete application because intent is already demonstrated. I would schedule structured re-engagement touches for the unresponsive lead and document every action in HubSpot so no opportunity is lost.

How do you balance high outreach volume with a personalized client experience?

I use a consistent outreach framework while tailoring the opening, questions, and next step to the client’s stage and stated needs. CRM notes, templates, and task queues help me work efficiently without making communications feel generic.

Describe how you would handle a prospect who started an insurance application but stopped responding.

I would review their application status and prior interactions, then send a concise, helpful follow-up that addresses likely barriers and offers a simple next step. If there is no reply, I would continue with a respectful multi-channel cadence and record outcomes to improve future messaging.

What metrics would you monitor to improve lead conversion?

I would track speed-to-lead, contact rate, response rate, meeting-booked rate, application completion rate, conversion by source, and follow-up activity. I would use these metrics to identify where leads stall and test targeted improvements in cadence or messaging.

Why are you interested in progressing from a BDR role to an insurance advisor role?

I enjoy helping people make informed decisions and see the BDR role as an opportunity to develop strong discovery, communication, and product knowledge. Earning licensing and becoming an advisor would allow me to take greater ownership of client outcomes while continuing to grow my commercial skills.
