Sample interview questions
I would separate ingestion, durable storage, metadata indexing, and query-serving concerns. I would use partitioned, schema-managed event streams, idempotent producers and consumers, scalable object or analytical storage, and observability for throughput, lag, errors, and cost. The design would include retention policies, backpressure handling, and clear SLOs for ingestion and query latency.
I would first correlate the latency increase with traces, service metrics, database metrics, deployment events, traffic patterns, and resource saturation. I would isolate whether the bottleneck is in application logic, network calls, database queries, cache behavior, or Kubernetes resource contention. After validating the root cause, I would deploy a measured mitigation, monitor the outcome, and document preventive alerts or capacity changes.
I use explicit delivery semantics, idempotent processing where possible, durable retry and dead-letter workflows, consumer lag monitoring, and carefully selected partitioning keys. I also define schema compatibility rules, test failure and replay paths, and ensure consumers can safely recover after restarts or duplicate events.
I begin with the workload characteristics and inspect query plans, cardinality, indexes, partitioning, and storage layout. I then address the largest bottlenecks through query changes, appropriate indexes, data partitioning, caching, batching, or moving analytical workloads to a system better suited to them. I validate improvements with representative benchmarks and monitor performance regressions in production.
I provide timely code reviews that explain trade-offs, pair on difficult design or debugging work, and set clear ownership boundaries for progressively harder tasks. I use design documents and postmortems as teaching tools, while ensuring quality standards and operational expectations are explicit. This helps engineers build judgment without creating a dependency on constant oversight.
