Application rejected after an internal referral

Job Search Asked Active 10 Aug 2026
Question details

Yesterday I received an automated rejection for a remote project coordinator role less than a day after applying. A former colleague had already submitted an internal referral and told me the recruiting system showed it as received. The rejection did not mention the referral, and the colleague has not heard anything from the hiring team yet. I meet the stated requirements, although my most recent role was in a different industry. Should I ask my colleague to contact the recruiter or hiring manager, or assume the referral was reviewed and move on? I do not want to put them in an awkward position or appear to challenge a screening decision, but I also do not know whether the referral was attached correctly before the application was rejected.
