CCOF

CCOF, or California Certified Organic Farmers, is a nonprofit organization founded in 1973 by a group of activist growers seeking to promote and define organic production practices. The organization began with 54 grower members and has since evolved into a leader in organic certification and advocacy, operating out of Santa Cruz, California.

In the following decades, CCOF continued to expand, opening its first office space and hiring its first paid staff members. The organization faced challenges, including financial difficulties, but received support from notable entities like The Grateful Dead. By the late 1980s, CCOF began training organic inspectors, recognizing the need for qualified professionals in the field. The rise of mainstream interest in organic products also boosted CCOF’s growth, particularly following media events like the Alar scare in 1989.
