Sample interview questions
How would you design a process to close the books for 15 entities within three business days?

I would first map each entity's close dependencies, assign clear owners, and standardize a detailed close calendar. I would automate recurring entries and data imports where feasible, establish materiality thresholds for review, reconcile high-risk accounts daily during the period, and use a centralized checklist to surface blockers early.

Describe how you would approach intercompany accounting and transfer-pricing entries in a multi-entity group.

I would document the legal-entity relationships, service arrangements, allocation methodologies, currencies, and transfer-pricing policies before building repeatable monthly entries. I would ensure reciprocal balances reconcile between entities, retain support for allocations, and partner with tax advisers to confirm that the accounting treatment and documentation align with local requirements.

What financial reporting would you prioritize for leadership in a rapidly acquisitive business?

I would provide timely entity-level income statements, balance sheets, cash-flow statements, and a consolidated management view. I would also add variance analysis, working-capital metrics, acquisition integration tracking, cash forecasting, and a concise list of data-quality or compliance risks requiring decisions.

Give an example of a finance process you would automate first and explain why.

I would typically start with recurring data ingestion and account reconciliations because they consume significant manual effort and affect close speed. After validating source-system controls, I would automate standardized imports, mapping, exception flags, and reconciliation outputs while keeping an auditable approval workflow for unusual items.

How do you handle an urgent, ambiguous problem when there is no established playbook?

I clarify the decision needed, gather the minimum reliable data, identify financial, compliance, and operational risks, and propose a practical path forward with assumptions clearly stated. I then execute quickly, communicate progress and trade-offs to stakeholders, and document the solution so the issue becomes easier to handle in the future.

About Inspiration Commerce Group (ICG)
We’re a team of ~50 people who’ve done 6 acquisitions in 18 months and scaled from $0 to >$100M in revenue. We’re a global group with businesses across the US, UK, and EU. We buy and build companies that help people find and buy the products they love. Our portfolio includes leading fashion marketplaces like Italist, HEWI and Verishop, affiliate marketing platforms like Stylight and MyBestBrands, B2B technology solutions like Bonsai, and niche Marketplaces in the Creator and Construction spaces like Everpress and DOZR.

About the Role

We’re looking for someone to join us as a Finance & Accounting Manager/Lead.

In this role you’ll ensure that we can make business decisions off of timely, accurate and effective financial data. This means ensuring we are collecting the right data, we are booking that data accurately, reporting it effectively, and staying on top of our compliance obligations so that they do not slow us down. This is a full-time, remote-first role in Canada, the UK or the EU.

Things You’ll Work On

  • Accounting Ownership: you’ll ensure that our team is able to close the month within 3 business days. This means booking revenue/expenses from various systems, applying inter-company transfer pricing, making accruals where needed, performing journal entries, etc. We close the books on 15 entities globally.

  • Financial Reporting: you’ll prepare individual reporting for distinct legal entities, as well as a consolidated view for operating groups and the group as a whole. This will include Income Statements, Balance Sheets, Cashflow Statements and other management reporting.

  • Tax Coordination: we conduct business throughout Canada, the USA and the EU. You’ll support with sales tax/VAT calculations, reporting and filing. You’ll coordinate with our external tax partners to run year-end prep, corporate filings and tax optimization projects.

  • Automation & Scaleable Systems: you’ll embrace technology, modern tooling and AI to automate and augment as much as you can. We don’t want to replace people, but we do want to replace monotonous, manual, repetitive work.

Attitudes

We don’t care what your current job title is, how long you’ve been working, or whether you have a CPA. We do care about you being tightly aligned with our operating principles:

  • You’re competitive and love to win. You’re competitive and are always looking for an edge. You have a high bar (some would say “unrealistic”) for yourself and those you work with.

  • You do whatever it takes. You’re willing to do what others won’t to achieve what others can’t. What we’re doing is hard. Really hard. Sacrifices are required in the pursuit of greatness, and we’re chasing greatness.

  • Founder-level ownership. If something breaks, you fix it. If there’s an opportunity, you chase it. You (and we) never say “that’s not my job“.

  • Curiosity with teeth. You don’t just ask why something isn’t working — you dig until you know, then you ship a fix.

  • You ask for forgiveness, not permission.

  • You’re a self-starter. You love being in the weeds and rolling up your sleeves to get things done. You never let roadblocks get in the way of getting things done; the laws of physics alone dictate what you can do.

  • You have excellent analytical skills. The term ‘quantitative rigour’ gets you excited. You love using data to help identify problems, discover opportunities, and substantiate your ideas.

Who this role is right for

  • Someone who has a foundation in finance & accounting and is ready to take their next step and go both broader + deeper in their work

  • Someone who enjoys building automations and systems, and likes to work on unique/complex problems

  • Someone who wants to not just rebuild a finance function, but set it up to scale, optimize it efficiently, and make a real impact

  • Someone who thrives in chaos: throw you a new challenge on Friday, and you’ll know by Monday what you want to do and how you want to do it

Who this role is not right for

  • People who want a stable, predictable or repetitive role/set of tasks

  • People looking for active mentorship (i.e. you’d rather have someone tell you exactly what to do vs. figure it out on your own)

  • People who are excited about building and managing a team vs handing the details themselves

  • People who find comfort in following a playbook

  • People who don’t want to be in the weeds, spending hours querying a database and slicing the data to find new insights and hypotheses to test

  • People who prefer stability over speed or “strategy over execution”

Logistics/Next Steps

  • Process: everyone will hear back within 3 days of applying. Our process involves calls with 2-3 members of our team. You’ll also complete 1-day working session (paid, on-site in Toronto, if you’re outside of Toronto we’ll fly you in).

  • Work Setup: we operate Remote-first with some time spent In-Person together throughout the year as needed.

  • Working Hours: we trust team members to manage their own schedules and believe that taking time off to recharge makes you more productive in the long run. That said, we’re early enough that everyone’s work makes a big difference on the company’s trajectory. As a result, our team finds hard work fulfilling when we know it will be impactful. Typically, we check out around 6pm to protect personal time and then log back in later at night to finish anything that was left undone.
