Sample interview questions
I would begin by defining the bank's decision calendar, core financial statements, planning processes, governance requirements, and data sources. I would then establish an integrated driver-based model, recurring forecast cadence, variance-review process, and clear reporting for the CFO and leadership team. Finally, I would hire and develop a team with complementary planning, modeling, reporting, and business-partnering capabilities.
I would identify the material risk drivers, such as origination volume, credit losses, funding costs, liquidity needs, operating expenses, and regulatory capital requirements. I would build baseline, adverse, and severe scenarios with transparent assumptions, test their impact on earnings, capital ratios, and liquidity, and validate inputs with risk, treasury, and business partners. The output would include management actions, trigger thresholds, and concise executive reporting.
I focus on the few operational and financial drivers that materially explain outcomes, while maintaining reconciliation to actuals and financial statements. I document assumptions, quantify sensitivity, and compare results with prior forecasts and scenario cases. For executives, I distill the analysis into implications, risks, decisions required, and recommended actions rather than presenting model detail alone.
In a strong example, I would explain how I detected a gap between forecast and actual performance, separated temporary effects from structural drivers, and partnered with operating leaders to validate the root cause. I would present quantified scenarios and a clear action plan, such as revising investment levels, changing pricing assumptions, or adjusting capacity. The key outcome would be a timely decision that improved forecast accuracy or financial performance.
I would set a clear operating rhythm, define decision rights and quality standards, and connect each person's work to business outcomes. I would coach through frequent feedback, review analytical thinking as well as outputs, and create opportunities for team members to present to stakeholders. I would also protect time for foundational process improvements so the team can scale without sacrificing responsiveness.
