Sample interview questions
I would first align on the business outcome, success metrics, stakeholders, and target operating model. I would assess the current architecture and delivery risks, define a phased production plan covering security, data quality, performance, cost, governance, and enablement, then maintain regular progress reviews and escalate blockers early. After launch, I would monitor adoption and operational KPIs and identify the next highest-value use cases.
I would start with workload telemetry to identify the principal cost and latency drivers, including cluster configuration, job patterns, data layout, query plans, shuffle behavior, and inefficient code. I would validate the findings with the customer team, prioritize changes by impact and effort, and test improvements against agreed performance and cost baselines. I would also document operational guardrails so the optimization is sustainable.
I prepare by understanding their business priorities, technical landscape, and current risks, then communicate recommendations in terms of both engineering trade-offs and measurable outcomes. I am transparent about assumptions, ownership, and dependencies, and I follow through consistently on commitments. This creates trust while allowing me to challenge decisions constructively when needed.
I would establish a clear incident structure with an accountable owner, technical workstream leads, a concise problem statement, and a regular communication cadence. I would separate immediate mitigation from root-cause analysis, coordinate the appropriate product, engineering, support, and services resources, and keep customer stakeholders informed with factual updates. Following resolution, I would lead a review that converts findings into preventative architecture or operational improvements.
I view growth as an outcome of delivered customer value rather than a separate sales activity. By jointly prioritizing use cases with clear business impact, achieving reliable production outcomes, and building executive alignment, I can uncover logical expansion opportunities. I would work closely with account and field teams to ensure recommendations are technically sound, appropriately timed, and tied to the customer's objectives.
