Sample interview questions
I would first define the target population, conversion metric, treatment exposure, and decision horizon. When possible, I would use a randomized holdout or geo experiment; otherwise, I would select an appropriate quasi-experimental method such as difference-in-differences, matched controls, regression discontinuity, or synthetic control. I would test key assumptions, quantify uncertainty, evaluate incremental lift and cost efficiency, and clearly communicate limitations.
I would align channel spend, impressions, pricing, promotions, seasonality, product changes, and outcome data at a consistent time grain. The model would incorporate adstock and saturation transformations, priors informed by marketing knowledge, and controls for trend and external factors. I would validate it with holdout periods and incrementality experiments, then use posterior distributions to report channel contribution, ROI ranges, and budget-allocation scenarios.
Common pitfalls include peeking before the planned sample size, multiple-comparison inflation, sample-ratio mismatch, novelty effects, interference between users, and focusing on statistically significant but immaterial effects. I avoid these through pre-registration of hypotheses and metrics, power analysis, instrumentation validation, guardrail metrics, appropriate corrections, and reporting both effect sizes and confidence intervals.
I would lead with the business decision, such as whether to scale, pause, or redesign a channel. I would state the estimated incremental outcome in plain language, translate it into expected return or efficiency, and show the uncertainty range and main assumptions using a simple visual. I would keep methodological detail available for follow-up while making the recommendation and next experiment explicit.
I would validate the metric definition and data pipeline first, then segment the decline by acquisition channel, device, geography, new versus returning users, funnel stage, and time. I would compare the timing with releases, campaign changes, pricing, tracking updates, and seasonality, using statistical tests to distinguish meaningful shifts from noise. I would summarize likely drivers, quantify impact, recommend immediate mitigations, and propose targeted experiments or monitoring to confirm the cause.
