Arlington Countyβs Office of Public Safety Wellness (OPSW) is seeking a Wellness Intern looking to gain meaningful entry level professional work while also receiving exposure in areas typically found in local government such as Public Health, Public Administration, Human Services, and much more.Β

Arlington County is an exciting, innovative local government entity located in Northern Virginia. We are seeking highly motivated individuals for exciting one-year Internships in a variety of positions across the County. These positions offer a career opportunity to qualified individuals with little or no previous professional work experience to help them prepare for a career in a variety of fields of work. This Internship will provide recent college graduates and currently enrolled graduate students with in-depth, hands-on learning opportunities in areas critical to supporting local government initiatives while participating in a developmental and training cohort with peers.
Internship
Over the course of a year, Interns work under the mentorship and supervision of senior staff members to gain valuable on-the-job training and real-world work experience. They support the County’s efforts to consistently work toward greater efficiency and effectiveness by offering improved processes and fresh ideas, and by leveraging smart technologies, while becoming familiar with the public-sector work environment as a viable and fulfilling career path.

Selection Criteria
Minimum: Recent, 2024 and/or 2025 college graduates earning either a Bachelorβs or a Masterβs degree* in the area of consideration prior to the start date of the internship must have:
Note: Any time lapse between earning degrees may not include significant professional-level work experience.
Degree Requirements: Public Health, Human Services or related fields as well as fields of public safety specialization (Fire, Police, Health, Safety). Applications will be accepted from candidates graduating with a degree no later than September, 2025 and from candidates who are recently graduated or currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in their field as described above.

Special Requirements
Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
Driverβs License: The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator’s license from the applicant’s place of residence or the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant’s official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant’s driving record.
Additional Information
Work Hours: This is a full-time position (40 hrs/week) Monday – Friday, between the core business hours of 8:00am – 5:00pm with some flexibility required for weekend and evening hours, as well as telework opportunities available upon prior approval from the supervisor. This is not a fully remote opportunity. Employees will be expected to be in the office at the discretion of the Supervisor and needs of the agency as well as to attend in-person classroom training.
