Role Purpose
The Intermediate Accountant will be responsible for preparing high-quality financial statements, tax returns, and supporting schedules for New Zealand clients. The role requires strong technical accounting skills, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to work to deadlines in collaboration with the onshore team.
1. Compliance & Reporting
– Prepare annual financial statements in accordance with NZ IFRS and NZ tax legislation.
– Complete income tax, GST, FBT, and other returns as required.
– Assist with management accounts and periodic reporting.
2. Workpapers & Reconciliations
– Prepare and review workpapers to ensure accuracy and completeness.
– Reconcile bank accounts, debtors, creditors, GST, payroll, and other control accounts.
3. Client Support
– Liaise with onshore managers regarding job progress, queries, and additional information requirements.
– Ensure client records are maintained to high standards.
4. Quality & Process
– Follow firm workflows, templates, and review procedures.
– Proactively identify and flag issues to managers.
– Maintain confidentiality and data security standards at all times.
5. Continuous Improvement
– Stay updated with NZ tax law changes and accounting standards.
– Contribute ideas to improve work efficiency and accuracy.
Essential:
– Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
– Minimum 2–3 years’ experience in public practice accounting.
– Experience with NZ accounting standards and tax compliance (or willingness to learn).
– Strong knowledge of accounting software, preferably Xero and Xero Practice Manager (XPM).
– Good command of written and spoken English.
Preferred:
– Experience in an offshoring or outsourcing role.
– Familiarity with MYOB, WorkflowMax, FYI Docs, or similar tools.
– Knowledge of NZ CA firm workflows and reporting cycles.
– High attention to detail and accuracy.
– Strong time management skills and ability to work to deadlines.
– Proactive communicator who seeks clarification when needed.
– Team-oriented mindset with the ability to work independently.
– Commitment to ongoing professional development.
– Job turnaround time within agreed deadlines.
– Accuracy rate (minimal rework from reviewer).
– Compliance with firm processes and documentation standards.
– Positive feedback from onshore managers.
