Svelte React Kubernetes REST API GraphQL CI/CD Distributed Systems Full-Stack Development State Management Open Source

I am writing to express my strong interest in the Senior Full-Stack Engineer position at Defense Unicorns. With over 5 years of experience building complex, data-driven interfaces for distributed systems, I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to the Fleet team's mission of enabling edge management capabilities.

My expertise in modern frontend frameworks like React and Svelte, combined with a deep understanding of API design and state management, aligns perfectly with the requirements of this role. I have a proven track record of translating complex backend capabilities into intuitive user experiences, particularly in environments with asynchronous data flows.

I am particularly drawn to Defense Unicorns' focus on mission-critical software delivery for national security. My experience working with Kubernetes and CI/CD pipelines, along with my contributions to open-source projects, demonstrates my ability to thrive in a remote, asynchronous team setting.

I am eager to bring my technical skills and passion for building robust operational interfaces to your team. Thank you for considering my application.

Describe your experience building complex data-driven interfaces for distributed systems. How do you handle real-time state synchronization?
I have built interfaces for managing fleets of devices using React and Redux, where I implemented WebSocket connections to sync state in real-time. I used redux-saga to handle side effects and optimistic updates to ensure a responsive UI even under network constraints.
How do you approach designing APIs for frontend consumption? Give an example of a time you had to balance frontend needs with backend constraints.
I prefer GraphQL for its flexibility, but in one project, we had a legacy REST API. I worked with backend engineers to add composite endpoints and use GraphQL as a thin layer to aggregate data, reducing frontend complexity.
Can you walk us through your testing strategy for a frontend application that interacts with complex backend services?
I use unit tests for components and reducers, integration tests for API interactions with mocked services, and end-to-end tests with Cypress for critical user flows. I also implement contract testing to ensure API compatibility.
Describe a time you had to optimize performance in a data-intensive UI. What metrics did you track?
In a monitoring dashboard, I used React Profiler and Chrome DevTools to identify re-render bottlenecks. I implemented virtualization for large lists, lazy loading for charts, and memoization to reduce computations. Load time improved by 40%.
How do you stay updated with evolving frontend technologies? Share an example of adopting a new tool or framework in a project.
I follow tech blogs and open-source communities. Recently, I adopted SvelteKit for a side project and was impressed by its simplicity. I then proposed it for a new internal tool, leading to faster development and smaller bundle sizes.

Role Description:

Defense Unicorns is seeking a Senior Full-Stack Engineer to join our Fleet team, focused on building and evolving Fleet Management and Edge Management capabilities within the UDS platform.

This role is centered on developing complex, data-driven interfaces that allow users to understand, manage, and operate distributed systems across edge and remote environments. These are not simple CRUD interfaces—they are operational control surfaces for real-world systems.

You will own and drive the frontend experience, while working across the stack to ensure tight alignment between UI behavior, APIs, and underlying system capabilities.

You’ll collaborate closely with backend engineers, platform engineers, and designers to build responsive, reliable, and intuitive experiences on top of complex APIs and distributed system state.

While frontend-focused, this role requires strong full-stack awareness—understanding how data flows through systems, how APIs are designed, and how frontend decisions impact system behavior, especially in asynchronous and distributed environments.

What You’ll Work On:

  • Building interfaces for managing individual assets and large fleets of systems
  • Designing and implementing data-rich UIs that reflect real-time and distributed system state
  • Developing workflows for deploying, updating, and monitoring systems across environments
  • Handling complex state management and asynchronous data flows
  • Integrating frontend applications with backend APIs and platform services
  • Improving usability and clarity for technically complex operations
  • Partnering with UX to translate complex system behavior into intuitive user experiences

Responsibilities:

  • Design and build scalable, maintainable frontend applications
  • Collaborate with product, UX, and backend engineers to define and implement features
  • Translate complex backend capabilities into clear and usable interfaces
  • Write clean, testable, and well-structured code
  • Develop and maintain automated tests (unit, integration, and end-to-end)
  • Contribute to frontend architecture and technical decisions
  • Identify and improve performance, reliability, and usability issues
  • Work effectively in a remote, asynchronous environment

Travel Expectations/Requirements: 0-5%

The listed responsibilities are not exhaustive and additional responsibilities may be assigned based on the evolving needs of the organization. We are seeking a dynamic individual who is able to adapt and take on new responsibilities as they arise.

Preferred Experience and Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in frontend or fullstack development
  • Strong proficiency with modern frontend frameworks (Svelte or React preferred; Angular or similar frameworks acceptable)
  • Strong familiarity with modern frontend tooling and build system best practices
  • Experience with testing strategies across frontend applications
  • Experience building data-intensive or state-heavy applications
  • Strong understanding of API design and integration (REST, GraphQL, etc.)
  • Experience working closely with backend systems and distributed architectures
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to navigate complex systems
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills

Nice to Have:

  • Experience building interfaces for infrastructure, DevOps, or platform systems
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes, containers, or distributed systems concepts
  • Experience designing for constrained or unreliable network environments
  • Contributions to open source or developer tooling projects
  • Experience with CI/CD and deployment pipelines

Full compensation packages are based on candidate experience. Compensation ranges are established using national benchmarking data and apply across all geographic locations within the United States.
