Dear Hiring Manager,

I am writing to express my strong interest in the Communications Lead - UK position at Mozilla. With over six years of experience in product communications and media relations within the tech sector, I have successfully driven narratives that resonate across European markets. At my previous role, I led integrated campaigns that increased brand awareness by 30% and secured coverage in top-tier outlets like Wired and TechCrunch.

My expertise aligns perfectly with Mozilla's mission to make the internet better. I have a proven track record of translating complex technical concepts into compelling stories for diverse audiences. I am particularly drawn to Mozilla's people-first approach and open-source roots, which I believe are critical differentiators in today's tech landscape.

I am eager to bring my strategic storytelling skills and deep understanding of the European media landscape to your team. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss how I can contribute to Mozilla's product communications efforts.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Can you describe a time you developed and executed a strategic communications plan for a product launch in a European market? What was the outcome?
I led the launch of a new browser feature in Germany and France. I developed a phased media strategy targeting tech and consumer press, coordinated with local PR agencies, and crafted key messages emphasizing privacy. The campaign resulted in over 50 media placements and a 20% increase in feature adoption within three months.
How would you approach building relationships with media across different EU countries, considering cultural and language differences?
I would research each market's key journalists and outlets, tailor pitches to local interests, and leverage local agencies or freelancers for language support. I'd also attend industry events to network and maintain regular check-ins to understand their beats, ensuring relevance and trust.
Tell me about a time you had to manage a sensitive issue or crisis communications. How did you handle it?
When a product bug caused data exposure, I quickly assembled a cross-functional team, prepared a transparent statement, and coordinated with legal. I proactively reached out to key journalists to explain the fix and our commitment to privacy, which minimized negative coverage and maintained user trust.
How do you measure the success of a communications campaign?
I use a mix of quantitative metrics like media impressions, share of voice, and website traffic, along with qualitative measures such as message pull-through and sentiment analysis. I also track business outcomes like product adoption or brand awareness surveys to align with company goals.
Why are you interested in working at Mozilla specifically?
I admire Mozilla's mission to keep the internet open and people-first. Having followed Firefox's privacy innovations, I want to contribute to a company that prioritizes user rights over profit. The role's focus on European markets also aligns with my experience and passion for cross-cultural communications.

Why Mozilla?

Mozilla Corporation is the non-profit-backed technology company that has shaped the internet for the better over the last 25 years. We make pioneering brands like Firefox, the privacy-minded web browser. Now, with more than 225 million people around the world using our products each month, we’re shaping the next 25 years of technology and helping to reclaim an internet built for people, not companies. Our work focuses on diverse areas including AI, social media, security and more. And we’re doing this while never losing our focus on our core mission – to make the internet better for people.

The Mozilla Corporation is wholly owned by the non-profit 501(c)(3) Mozilla Foundation. This means we aren’t beholden to any shareholders — only to our mission. Along with thousands of contributors around the world, Mozillians build open-source software that enables people to enjoy the internet on their own terms.

The Role

We’re a global team of makers, builders, and doers, united by our mission to make the internet a better place. You will play a key role in shaping narratives around Firefox and other Mozilla products, while helping elevate Mozilla’s voice across tech and consumer conversations.

Success in this role requires strong, strategic storytelling, clearly differentiating Mozilla by highlighting our values, open-source roots, and people-first approach. You’ll go beyond traditional media relations to find creative ways to drive relevance in culture and the broader tech landscape, while also supporting senior leaders on key communications moments when needed.

Responsibilities

  • Drive communications across key EU markets, supporting product launches, campaigns, media relations and storytelling
  • Develop and execute media strategies that build awareness and clearly differentiate Mozilla

  • Prepare and support senior executives for media and public engagements as needed
  • Lead cross-functional communications efforts with strong ownership and follow-through
  • Track performance and contribute to ongoing improvement of communications impact
  • Support reactive communications, including media inquiries and sensitive issues

Key qualifications

  • 5–8 years of experience in communications, PR, or media relations (in-house or agency), ideally within consumer, tech or product-driven organizations
  • Proven ability to develop and execute strategic communications plans, not just execution
  • Strong storytelling skills, with the ability to translate complex topics into clear, compelling narratives for broad audiences
  • Experience supporting or collaborating with senior executives, including preparation for media and public engagements
  • Strong understanding of the European media landscape, with experience working across EU markets preferred
  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills, with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and operate effectively in a fast-paced, global environment
  • High judgment, strong integrity, and a proactive, ownership-driven mindset
  • Fluency in English required; German or another European language is a strong plus
  • Passion for Mozilla’s mission and a genuine interest in shaping a better internet
