Rust Golang Cryptography Security Code Review Teamwork Algorithms Passkeys Post Quantum Algorithms Standards Bodies

I am writing to express my strong interest in the Developer Intern, Data Security position at 1Password. With a deep passion for cryptography and secure software development, I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to your team's work on cryptographic libraries and algorithms.

My experience includes implementing cryptographic algorithms in Rust and Golang, and I am eager to apply these skills in real-world applications. I understand the importance of security, performance, and usability, and I am committed to producing high-quality code.

I am particularly drawn to 1Password's mission of unleashing employee productivity without compromising security. I am confident that my curiosity, teamwork, and willingness to learn would make me a valuable addition to your team.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the possibility of contributing to 1Password's innovative work.

Can you explain the difference between symmetric and asymmetric encryption and give an example of when each is used?
Symmetric encryption uses the same key for encryption and decryption, e.g., AES, and is fast, suitable for encrypting large data. Asymmetric encryption uses a public-private key pair, e.g., RSA, for secure key exchange or digital signatures. In practice, hybrid systems use asymmetric to exchange a symmetric key.
Describe your experience with Rust or Golang. How would you implement a simple cryptographic hash function in one of these languages?
I have used Rust extensively and would use the 'sha2' crate to compute a SHA-256 hash. For example: use sha2::{Sha256, Digest}; let mut hasher = Sha256::new(); hasher.update(b"hello world"); let result = hasher.finalize();. Rust's memory safety is crucial for cryptographic code.
What are the key considerations when designing a secure cryptographic library?
Key considerations include using well-vetted algorithms like AES and SHA-3, avoiding side-channel attacks through constant-time operations, proper key management, and providing easy-to-use APIs that prevent misuse. Regular security audits and following standards like NIST are also important.
Tell me about a time you worked in a team to solve a complex problem. How did you contribute?
In a group project, we implemented a secure chat application. I focused on the end-to-end encryption module using the Signal protocol. I coordinated with teammates on integrating the protocol and ensured the code was well-documented. We held code reviews to catch issues early.
How do you stay updated on the latest developments in cryptography and security?
I follow security blogs like Schneier on Security, read research papers from conferences like CRYPTO and USENIX Security, and participate in online communities. I also practice by implementing new algorithms and contributing to open-source security projects.

Come join us and help shape a safer, simpler digital future.

As part of the Data Security Team, you will be partially responsible for the underlying cryptography across our products. You’ll help build cryptographic libraries and implement the latest algorithms directly into our client applications with security, performance and usability in mind. You’ll develop proof-of-concepts and implement new industry specifications into code. You’ll also conduct code and design reviews to ensure good cryptographic hygiene and standards across our codebase.

This is a remote opportunity within Canada or the US. This position will be for 4 months – September to December 2026.

What you can expect:

  • You have a passion for using modern cryptographic algorithms and want to learn how to apply them in real world situations.

  • You work well in a team environment with positive communications amongst a variety of technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Comfortable to work within a small team of security developers who are specialists in Rust and Golang Security

  • Develop cryptographic or other security libraries to share common security-critical code across our applications

What we’re looking for:

  • Confidence: A willingness to take on new challenges, and see them through to completion.

  • Humility: You’re not afraid to ask “stupid” questions and make mistakes (as long as you learn from them).

  • Curiosity: You look for better ways of doing things, even if everyone seems happy with how they are.

  • Teamwork: We work together, and succeed as a team!

Bonus points for:

  • Experience working with standards bodies (e.g. FIDO, W3C, ISO, NIST, OIDF)

  • Experience with emerging industry standards and technologies (e.g. Passkeys and/or Post Quantum Algorithms)

  • Experience with Rust and/or Golang, or a demonstrated ability to pick up new languages quickly.

Our culture
At 1Password, we prioritize collaboration, clear and transparent communication, receptiveness to feedback, and alignment with our core values: keep it simple, lead with honesty, and put people first.
You’ll be part of a team that challenges the status quo, and is excited to experiment and iterate in search of the best solution. That said, 1Password is not for everyone. Our work is demanding, we strive for excellence, and the pace is fast. We need people who are keen to take on challenging problems, who seek feedback to grow, and who are driven to make an impact. If you’re looking for a place where you can settle into a comfortable routine, this might not be the right fit for you. We’re looking for individuals who are proven experts in their fields, as well as those who are highly adaptable, can thrive in ambiguity and through change, are curious, and above all deliver results.
We are committed to leveraging cutting-edge technology—including AI—to achieve our mission. We also understand that thinking critically about AI in its current forms will help us create better solutions for our customers and ourselves with its future forms, which will help us continue to close the gap between security and privacy and achieve our mission. We want team members at all levels to take the approach of actively learning AI best practices, identifying opportunities to apply AI in meaningful ways, and driving innovative solutions in their daily work. Embracing the future of AI isn’t just encouraged at 1Password—it’s an essential part of how we will be successful at 1Password.
Our approach to remote work
We believe in the power of remote work, but recognize that in-person connection is important to help us achieve our mission. While we are a remote-first company, travel for in-person engagement is a part of most roles. Frequency will depend on role and responsibilities, and may include, but is not limited to: annual department-wide offsites, team meetings, and customer/industry events.

How we’re using AI today

Our Engineering, Product, and Design teams are thoughtfully integrating AI across the full software and product development lifecycle to move faster without sacrificing quality or security. In practice, that looks like engineers using AI-assisted coding tools to accelerate reviews and catch bugs earlier, product managers synthesizing user research at scale, and designers rapidly prototyping and iterating with AI-generated mockups. We approach AI the same way we approach security: with clear principles, human accountability at every consequential decision point, and rigorous evaluation before anything ships to customers.
