Key Skills

Synon Cool2E COBOL IBM i AS400 Healthcare Claims Pharmacy Systems Legacy Modernization Technical Leadership Batch Processing

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am writing to express my strong interest in the Sr. Synon Developer position. With over 7 years of hands-on experience in Synon/Cool2E and COBOL on IBM i/AS400 platforms, I have a proven track record of enhancing mission-critical systems. In my previous roles, I have successfully delivered claim processing enhancements, integrated healthcare systems, and mentored junior developers. I am particularly excited about this opportunity because it allows me to leverage my legacy expertise while contributing to modernization initiatives. I am confident that my technical skills and leadership experience align perfectly with your team's needs.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the possibility of discussing how I can add value to your organization.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Describe your experience with Synon/Cool2E development. What types of applications have you built or maintained?
I have over 7 years of experience with Synon/Cool2E, primarily developing and maintaining claim adjudication and pharmacy benefits systems on IBM i/AS400. I have worked on high-volume transaction processing modules, including eligibility verification, claim pricing, and benefit accumulation. I also have experience in modernizing Synon-generated COBOL code for better performance and maintainability.
How do you troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues in a batch processing environment?
When a production issue arises, I first analyze the job logs and error messages to pinpoint the failure. I use tools like DB2 Query Manager and IBM i Navigator to trace data flow and identify anomalies. For resolution, I might modify Synon panels, adjust COBOL logic, or correct data inconsistencies. I also implement monitoring and alerting to prevent recurrence.
Can you explain how you would integrate a Synon-based system with external healthcare data exchanges using EDI or APIs?
Integration typically involves mapping EDI transactions (like 270/271 or 835) to our Synon data structures. I have used custom COBOL programs to parse incoming EDI files and update DB2 tables. For APIs, I would leverage IBM i's integrated web services or use third-party tools to expose AS400 data via RESTful services, ensuring HIPAA compliance through encryption and auditing.
Describe a time when you provided technical leadership to a team. How did you ensure adherence to best practices?
In one project, I led a team of four developers in a major system enhancement. I established code review standards for Synon and COBOL, conducted weekly knowledge-sharing sessions, and enforced naming conventions and documentation practices. I also mentored junior developers on debugging techniques and performance optimization.
What is your approach to legacy modernization while preserving business logic?
I balance modernization with stability by first understanding the core business logic through system documentation and SME consultations. I then create a phased plan: start with wrapping legacy programs with APIs, then gradually refactor modules using modern languages like Java or C# while keeping the Synon/COBOL core intact for critical transactions. This minimizes disruption.
