Cover letter sample

Dear Hiring Team,

I am excited to apply for the Chatbot Developer freelance opportunity with Mindrift. With over three years of hands-on experience building production-ready bots for WhatsApp, Telegram, and Discord, I have developed a strong command of platform APIs, webhooks, and conversational design.

My technical expertise includes Python and Node.js, along with integrating LLMs like OpenAI and Anthropic to create intelligent and responsive user experiences. I have also implemented robust logging and error handling to ensure bots remain reliable in real-world scenarios.

I am particularly drawn to the Tendem project because of its focus on practical, user-centric AI applications. My ability to work independently and ship complete solutions aligns well with the self-directed nature of this role.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my skills can contribute to your team. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]

Sample interview questions
Describe your experience building a bot for one of the major messaging platforms. What challenge did you face and how did you overcome it?

I built a WhatsApp bot for customer service that handled appointment booking. The main challenge was managing rate limits and ensuring message delivery within template constraints. I implemented a queue system and used Cloud API's webhook verification to maintain reliability. I also set up fallback handling for out-of-scope queries, redirecting them to a human agent.

How do you design a conversational flow that handles unexpected user inputs gracefully?

I always include an intent recognition layer, whether rule-based or via an LLM, and define fallback intents. The bot asks clarifying questions or offers options when confidence is low. I also implement a 'help' command and logging to analyze failure points, allowing continuous improvement of the dialogue.

Can you walk us through how you integrate a bot with a backend service like a CRM or database?

I create a modular service layer that the bot calls using REST APIs or database connectors. For example, when a user books an appointment, I send a POST request to the CRM endpoint with OAuth authentication. I also store conversation state in a NoSQL database to maintain context across sessions.

What are your strategies for ensuring a bot remains reliable in production, especially when dependencies fail?

I implement comprehensive logging, monitor webhook deliveries, and use retry mechanisms with exponential backoff. For third-party API failures, I design graceful degradation where the bot informs the user and retries later. I also use containerization and health checks to ensure the service restarts automatically.

How do you keep up with changes to messaging platform APIs and ensure your bots stay compliant with platform policies?

I regularly review official documentation and release notes for each platform. For WhatsApp, I monitor template approval policies and message limits. I also test in sandbox environments and maintain a changelog for code updates. Attending community forums and webinars helps me stay informed about upcoming changes.
