Dear Hiring Manager,
I am excited to apply for the Product Designer, Shop Everything role at Instagram. With over 8 years of experience designing large-scale consumer products and a deep passion for creator commerce, I have led end-to-end design efforts that merge user needs with business impact.
My expertise in interaction design, visual craft, and AI-assisted experiences aligns perfectly with your vision of making shopping native, trustworthy, and rewarding. I have successfully tackled ambiguity, prototyped innovative interactions, and collaborated with cross-functional teams to deliver products that scale.
I would love to bring my leadership and forward-thinking approach to your team and help shape the future of shoppable content on Instagram. I look forward to discussing how I can contribute.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
Sample interview questions
I would start by understanding the creator's mental model and existing workflow, then explore how AI can reduce friction without removing control. I'd prototype different levels of automation—from fully automatic tagging to suggested tags with review—and test them with creators to balance efficiency and trust. Clear feedback, transparency about AI decisions, and easy override options are essential.
In a previous role, I was responsible for redesigning a core shopping experience. I conducted extensive user research, mapped the current customer journey, and created a vision with interactive prototypes. I presented this to leadership, linking design decisions to business metrics, and iterated based on feedback. By involving stakeholders early and showing tangible outcomes, I gained alignment and brought the vision to life.
Trust is built through transparency, consistency, and user control. I would design clear product provenance indicators, standardized data fields, and visual cues that set expectations. I'd also create feedback loops for reporting issues and ensure the checkout process is secure and familiar. User testing is key to identifying trust barriers and iterating on design.
A persistent cart would sync across Instagram and other Facebook apps, allowing users to save items without intent to buy. I'd design it to be easily accessible, with visual reminders of saved items, and make it simple to add or remove items. The cart should feel lightweight and non-committal, with the ability to share or revisit later. I'd focus on reducing friction and providing a seamless transition from inspiration to purchase.
I would use low-fidelity prototypes to explore different delegation states—from full autonomy to user approval steps. I'd test scenarios where the AI makes decisions and where the user intervenes, measuring understanding and comfort. Key design elements include clear AI status indicators, simple controls for pausing or redirecting, and transparent summaries of actions taken. Iterative testing with users would refine the balance of automation and control.
Instagram is seeking a Product Designer to help lead our Shop Everything effort. Shop Everything is our bet that any piece of content on Instagram can become a storefront — that when you spot a jacket in a creator’s morning routine, a lamp in a travel Reel, or a skincare product in a friend’s Story, you should be able to tap and buy it, or discover five others like it, without ever leaving the app. We’re building a world where shopping is as native to the experience as liking or commenting: seamless, trustworthy, and rewarding for the creators who make it possible. As a key member of our design team, you will be responsible for ensuring that our products and features are valuable, easy to use, and of the highest level of craft and execution. In this role, you will design both sides of that exchange. On the creator side, you will empower creators to monetize their content and grow their businesses — defining how they add products to their content, how those products show up to their audience across Feed, Reels, Stories, and Profile, and how AI-assisted flows like automatic product tagging and search across millions of catalogs make earning from their content feel effortless rather than transactional. On the consumer side, you will turn inspiration into action across the end-to-end purchase experience, from the moment of interest through consideration, cart, and checkout. That means rebuilding the product detail page around AI-assisted decision-making rather than static product information, designing a cart that persists across Instagram so people can gather things over time and return when they’re ready, defining how much of a purchase someone can delegate to an AI agent and how they stay in control of it, and earning trust across a marketplace of third-party sellers with uneven product data and different ways of checking out. The ambition on both sides is to be differentiated and forward-looking: defining new patterns and experiences rather than replicating existing ones. You will own a core area of this work end-to-end, with room to grow across the full initiative as the team scales.ResponsibilitiesDefine the end-to-end creator commerce experience — from product discovery and linking, through how it surfaces to audiences, to earnings and insights* Design shoppable content formats that feel native, trustworthy, and delightful for consumers while rewarding creators* Innovate on AI-assisted creation flows (auto-tagging, cross-catalog search, product suggestions) that collapse friction and unlock new behaviors* Define the end-to-end purchase experience — from the moment of interest through consideration, cart, and checkout* Rebuild the product detail page around AI-assisted decision-making rather than static product information* Design a persistent, cross-app cart that fits how people actually browse — intermittently, without intent to buy today* Establish the interaction model for agentic purchase: delegation, control, transparency, and recovery* Design for trust across a multi-catalog world — third-party sellers, uneven data quality, and varying checkout models* Drive long-term vision for how creator commerce and conversion evolve on Instagram, and build conviction for it with leadership and cross-functional partnersQualificationsBachelor’s degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science, or a related field and 8+ years of experience in relevant field* 8+ years of experience building and shipping applications or software at company-level scale, leading the end-to-end experience within a large-scale, ambiguous domain* Interaction design experience with knowledge defining and evangelizing how an experience should behave based on understanding people’s needs, plus consideration of how this innovation will scale and examples of the use of appropriate prototyping tools to demonstrate how a particular interaction will work* Visual design experience with proficiency in typography, desktop/mobile UI, color, layout, iconography and aesthetic sense and how these elements impact product function* Strategic product thinking with the experience developing product goals, identifying opportunities in a global market, and making decisions based on the impact to people and the company* Experience representing work to executives, clearly and succinctly communicating the goals and concepts Demonstrated ability to integrate AI tools to optimize/redesign workflows and drive measurable impact (e.g., efficiency gains, quality improvements)* Understanding of the creator ecosystem and the tools that help drive better outcomes* Experience adhering to and implementing responsible, ethical AI practices (e.g., risk assessment, bias mitigation, quality and accuracy reviews)* Demonstrated ongoing AI skill development (e.g., prompt/context engineering, agent orchestration) and staying current with emerging AI technologies* Familiarity with industry-leading e-commerce shopping experiences* Experience with AI prototyping, coding and productivity tools
