Cover letter sample
Dear Hiring Team,
I am excited to apply for the Data Engineer (Marketing Systems) role at Ruby Labs. With a strong foundation in Python, SQL, and Bash, and hands-on experience with Google Tag Manager, pixels, and JavaScript, I have successfully built and maintained marketing data pipelines that power conversion tracking and payment flows. My ability to work independently and troubleshoot production systems aligns well with the ownership and proactivity you value.
I have worked with BigQuery, Airbyte, and Airflow to move and transform data across cloud environments, and I enjoy collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure data accuracy and reliability. I am comfortable supporting urgent release-day needs and am ready to adapt to the CET-friendly working hours.
I look forward to the opportunity to bring my engineering mindset and delivery-focused approach to Ruby Labs. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
Sample interview questions
I would first check the monitoring alerts and logs to identify the failure point. Then I would reproduce the issue in a staging environment, isolate the root cause (e.g., schema change, API timeout), and implement a fix with proper testing. I would also document the incident and add monitoring to prevent recurrence.
I would start by defining the conversion event and its parameters, then configure the relevant tags in GTM with triggers based on user actions. I would also ensure that the data layer captures the necessary values. For BigQuery, I would set up a pipeline to ingest the event data, perhaps via a proxy or server-side tagging, and transform it into a structured schema for analysis.
I have used Airbyte to create connectors for ad platform APIs (e.g., Google Ads, Meta Ads) and sync raw data into a warehouse. Airflow would be used to orchestrate these syncs on a schedule, handle dependencies, and trigger transformation jobs (e.g., dbt). I would also set up alerts to monitor sync health and data freshness.
I would first inspect the source system and the ingestion logs to see if duplicates originate from API retries or multiple event triggers. I would add idempotency keys and deduplication logic in the transformation layer, and possibly adjust the Airbyte sync settings (e.g., incremental mode). I would also monitor the flow to confirm the fix.
I implement data quality checks as part of the pipeline, such as row counts, schema validation, and anomaly detection. I also maintain clear documentation of data flows, using tools like dbt docs and markdown files in the repo, and schedule regular reviews with stakeholders to ensure alignment.
