The role focuses on designing, operating, and improving Python-based backend systems that are reliable, scalable, and maintainable. I would assign a durable idempotency key to the business operation, persist the request state and resulting outcome atomically where possible, and ensure retries return the prior successful result rather than create a duplicate side effect. I would also define timeout and retry policies, use correlation IDs, and expose metrics for duplicate and retry behavior.
I would first bound concurrency and queue consumption based on downstream capacity, then apply rate limits, batching where appropriate, and retry strategies with exponential backoff and jitter. I would monitor queue depth, processing latency, error rates, and saturation, while using dead-letter handling and load shedding for messages that cannot safely be processed immediately.
I would version or extend the contract rather than break existing fields, maintain tolerant readers and producers, and roll out changes behind feature flags when possible. I would add contract and integration tests, monitor adoption and errors during deployment, document the migration path, and remove deprecated behavior only after clients have transitioned.
I would establish impact and scope using dashboards, logs, traces, and recent deployment history, then mitigate quickly through rollback, feature flags, traffic controls, or safe fallbacks. I would communicate status clearly, preserve evidence, and lead a blameless postmortem with concrete corrective actions covering detection, resilience, testing, and operational documentation.
I would assess required workflow semantics, failure recovery, state durability, observability, integration needs, operational burden, security requirements, and expected scale. I would compare those needs against mature tooling, prototype the highest-risk paths, and choose an internal solution only if differentiated requirements outweigh the long-term cost of ownership.

To take our platform to the next level, we’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Verification Platform team. This team owns the workflow orchestration engine and the automated verification decisioning pipeline that powers Veriff’s core product — and that other product teams across Identity, Fraud, and End User Platform build on top of. Your work will directly determine the reliability, scalability, and capabilities of the flows that thousands of people go through every day.
You’ll help us protect honest people online by:
- Designing, building, and operating VP’s backend services, including the orchestration engine and the automated decisioning pipeline, with a strong focus on reliability, scalability, and maintainability
- Delivering key orchestration features such as multi-method flow execution, branching and fallback logic, and webhook integrations
- Improving the resilience of production-critical systems — backpressure and idempotency handling, backwards-compatibility testing, SPOF elimination, and end-to-end monitoring
- Participating in on-call rotations, incident response, and postmortems to ensure our most critical flows stay healthy
- Driving engineering quality through code reviews, CI practices, runbook documentation, and mentoring teammates
You are the right future Veriffian for the job if you have:
- 5+ years of experience building large-scale backend applications with Python, including event-driven and async architectures with message queues (e.g. SQS or similar)
- Proven ownership of production-critical services — you understand what it means to be on-call and take reliability seriously
- Deep experience designing for resilience in distributed systems: idempotency, backpressure, retries, backwards compatibility
- Strong understanding of modular design approaches and SOLID principles
- Hands-on experience building scalable, maintainable APIs
- Proficiency in a range of testing strategies that ensure robust and reliable software
- Solid understanding of relational database fundamentals
- Familiarity with structured logging and observability practices
- Strong communication skills — you can clearly articulate technical ideas to engineers and non-engineers alike
