Sample interview questions
I would begin by mapping the existing close calendar, dependencies, reconciliation status, and common bottlenecks. I would standardize checklists and account ownership, automate repeatable reconciliations where appropriate, and introduce review thresholds for material fluctuations. I would measure close duration and post-close adjustments to confirm that speed improvements do not compromise accuracy or control quality.
I would define accounting requirements early, including chart-of-accounts design, entity structure, close workflows, consolidation requirements, approval controls, and reporting outputs. I would partner with Finance and technical teams on data migration, test scripts, user acceptance testing, and reconciliation of legacy-to-new-system balances. After go-live, I would monitor exceptions closely and document sustainable operating procedures and controls.
I would first gather the relevant contracts, transaction facts, and business purpose, then identify applicable GAAP guidance and assess the accounting alternatives. My memo would clearly state the facts, authoritative guidance, analysis, conclusion, financial-statement impact, and required disclosures. I would review the conclusion with internal stakeholders and external auditors early when the matter is significant or judgmental.
I set clear ownership, deadlines, review expectations, and escalation paths while ensuring each team member understands how their work supports accurate reporting. I use regular one-on-ones to provide actionable feedback, remove blockers, and establish development goals such as deeper technical knowledge or increased process ownership. I also create cross-training opportunities to improve coverage and strengthen the team's resilience during close and audit periods.
I would validate the underlying accounting data first, then separate timing, volume, pricing, foreign-currency, and one-time drivers. I would work with FP&A and operational owners to connect the variance to business activity and ensure that the explanation is consistent across financial reporting and management reporting. The final communication would identify the driver, magnitude, outlook, and any actions needed to address risks or improve forecasting.
