Sample interview questions
How do you approach evaluating coverage for a complex cyber or technology E&O claim?

I begin by confirming the facts, policy period, insured entities, applicable insuring agreements, definitions, exclusions, conditions, limits, retentions, and endorsements. I compare the alleged loss to the policy language, identify information gaps early, and document a clear coverage position while coordinating with underwriters or coverage counsel when interpretation is complex.

Describe how you would manage an active cyber incident while controlling claim severity.

I would promptly establish the facts, confirm coverage and reporting requirements, engage approved incident-response providers where appropriate, and set a communication cadence with the insured and broker. I would closely monitor vendor scope, invoices, milestones, and emerging exposure so that response actions remain necessary, timely, and aligned with the policy.

What factors do you consider when recommending a claim reserve?

I assess known damages, defense costs, likely incident-response expenses, coverage limitations, retention, jurisdictional considerations, comparable claims, and the quality of available information. I set a defensible reserve based on current exposure, document the rationale, and revisit it as facts, strategy, or settlement posture change.

How do you handle difficult negotiations with insureds, brokers, or vendors?

I prepare by understanding the policy, facts, financial exposure, and each party's priorities. I communicate the rationale for my position clearly and respectfully, listen for practical alternatives, and seek a timely resolution that is fair, policy-consistent, and protective of the company's interests.

How would you use claims data to support underwriting improvements?

I would identify recurring claim drivers, control failures, vendor-cost patterns, industry trends, and coverage issues across the portfolio. I would translate those findings into concise, evidence-based feedback for underwriting, such as potential risk-selection indicators, pricing considerations, or loss-control recommendations.
