About this role.
The Ascend Resident is a paid, one-month independent contractor leadership residency for experienced in-house immigration and global mobility professionals. The Resident develops and hosts a webinar and sponsored in-person event, publishes original insights, creates a reusable community resource, and drives peer discussion. Candidates need direct ownership of immigration programs, including stakeholder management, compliance, vendor strategy, policy, employee experience, and program design. Success depends on credible field experience, independent judgment, practical thought leadership, and the ability to engage a senior professional community.

Sample interview questions
I would prioritize a timely webinar, a practical resource that members can immediately adapt, and structured peer discussion around a difficult operating challenge. I would measure usefulness through attendance and participation quality, resource adoption or downloads, follow-up questions, and evidence that participants can identify a concrete change to make in their programs.
I would focus on building resilient immigration programs amid policy volatility, including how teams can establish decision frameworks, escalation paths, and clear employee communications. It is timely because immigration leaders need practical ways to balance compliance, business continuity, cost, and employee experience when requirements shift quickly.
I would create an immigration vendor-governance playbook with evaluation criteria, service-level metrics, escalation protocols, stakeholder roles, and a quarterly business-review template. The resource would help program leaders evaluate vendor performance consistently while connecting service quality to employee experience and compliance outcomes.
I start by clarifying the legal constraints, business objectives, decision owners, and employee-impact considerations. I then present transparent options with risk, cost, timing, and operational trade-offs, document decisions, and maintain a communication cadence so stakeholders understand both the rationale and next steps.
I would design discussions around specific operating scenarios and invite members to share approaches, not just questions. I would use pre-event prompts, structured breakout questions, and post-event summaries that capture differing practices, unresolved issues, and practical experiments participants can test.
About the Role
The Ascend Residency is a highly competitive paid leadership role within Alma’s peer community for in-house immigration professionals. Each month, one Resident is selected to shape the community conversation, surface what matters most to the field, and make Ascend materially more valuable for immigration leaders across companies.
Residents are selected based on the strength of their professional experience, credibility in the immigration field, demonstrated judgment, and ability to contribute original thought leadership to the community.
This is not an ambassador title or a visibility play. It is a substantive working role for an immigration leader with real operating experience, a sharp perspective, and something valuable to contribute to peers.
What You’ll Do
Design and host 1 webinar on a topic the immigration community is actively wrestling with (Alma handles promotion and logistics)
Design and host 1 sponsored in-person event (Alma funds and supports)
Publish 3-4 original posts or insights on policy, compliance, AI tools, vendor strategy, or program design
Create 1 durable resource (framework, template, playbook, or briefing) aligned with Alma
Spark and sustain peer conversations across the community
What You’ll Receive
$8,000 honorarium, paid at end of the residency month; 5-10 hours/week
Production, scheduling, logistics, and promotion support from Alma
Sponsored in-person event designed with you and funded by Alma
Permanent recognition as an Ascend Resident and entry into the Ascend Alumni network
Priority consideration for future speaking, editorial, and community partnership opportunities
