Dear Hiring Team,

I am writing to express my interest in the Legal Counsel - Regulatory Compliance, Product and Privacy position at Canonical. With a strong background in privacy law and compliance, I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to a leading open-source company. My experience includes drafting policies, conducting PIAs, and advising product teams on regulatory matters, which aligns well with your needs. I am particularly drawn to Canonical's global, remote-first culture and its commitment to innovation. I look forward to the possibility of discussing how I can support your legal team.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Can you describe your experience with global privacy programs, including conducting PIAs and ROPAs?
I have led privacy impact assessments and maintained records of processing activities for multinational companies. I ensure compliance with GDPR, CCPA, and other regulations by collaborating with cross-functional teams to map data flows and implement necessary controls.
How would you approach drafting a corporate policy on AI usage in line with emerging regulations?
I would first conduct a regulatory scan to understand applicable laws, then work with product and engineering teams to assess current AI applications. The policy would balance innovation with risk mitigation, including transparency, bias testing, and accountability measures.
Tell us about a time you provided legal advice on a complex product development issue involving data privacy.
I advised a product team on integrating a new analytics feature. I reviewed the data collection practices, identified privacy risks, and recommended anonymization techniques. I also helped draft user-facing disclosures to ensure transparency and consent.
How do you stay updated on changes in privacy and compliance laws across different jurisdictions?
I subscribe to legal updates from major law firms, attend webinars, and participate in professional groups like the IAPP. I also set up alerts for regulatory bodies and regularly review guidance from data protection authorities.
Can you give an example of how you influenced a business decision to enhance compliance without hindering innovation?
In a previous role, I proposed a privacy-by-design framework that integrated compliance checks early in the product lifecycle. This reduced later rework and fostered a culture of privacy awareness, earning buy-in from both legal and engineering teams.
