Sample interview questions
How would you approach redesigning a complex payout workflow for users with very different levels of technical expertise?

I would begin by segmenting primary users and mapping their jobs, constraints, and failure points through existing data, support themes, and targeted interviews. I would simplify the core path around the most common task, progressively disclose advanced controls, prototype key flows, and validate them through usability testing with representative users. I would also define success metrics such as task completion, error rate, and time to first successful payout.

Describe how you have contributed to a design system while delivering product work.

I identify repeated patterns and assess whether they should become reusable components based on frequency, consistency needs, and implementation value. I document component behavior, content guidance, accessibility requirements, and edge cases, then partner with engineering to ensure the component is practical to build and maintain. This lets product delivery improve the system rather than creating one-off solutions.

How do you make effective decisions when requirements are ambiguous and stakeholders are distributed asynchronously?

I turn ambiguity into explicit assumptions, questions, constraints, and options in a concise written brief. I gather available evidence independently, share prototypes with rationale and trade-offs, and request focused feedback that stakeholders can provide asynchronously. Once aligned, I document the decision and success criteria so the team can move forward without unnecessary meetings.

How do you balance pixel-level craft with implementation simplicity?

I involve engineers early to understand technical constraints and explore solutions that preserve the essential user experience without introducing unnecessary complexity. I prioritize hierarchy, clarity, states, and interaction feedback over decorative detail, while using the design system to reduce custom work. I document responsive behavior and edge cases so quality survives implementation.

What role do AI tools play in your product-design workflow?

I use AI to accelerate divergent exploration, synthesize research inputs, generate prototype scaffolding, and test content or interaction alternatives. I treat AI output as a starting point rather than a decision-maker, validating concepts against user needs, accessibility standards, product constraints, and qualitative feedback. This preserves design judgment while increasing iteration speed.

Design at Tremendous

We design experiences that make complex systems feel straightforward and intuitive by taking our time to get things right. We favor depth and scale over speed, while raising the bar for quality so our product stays ahead of the competition. We’re a place for designers who care about doing things well.

About the role

We’re hiring a Senior Product Designer to own design for one of our product areas. You’ll join a small team of product designers led by our Director of Product Design, and you’ll be embedded in a squad with a product manager and several engineers.

Half of our product is used by recipients who never chose us, so the experience has to be self-evident. The other half is a powerful dashboard and API used by everyone from mom-and-pop shops to Google. With one designer per squad, you’ll have direct ownership of the experiences you ship.

What you’ll do

  • Craft rational, elegant, and intuitive interfaces. We care about implementation ease as much as we care about pixel-perfection.

  • Own the content. Designers at Tremendous own the product copy in their designs.

  • Strategic influence. Contribute to the team’s vision, planning, and roadmap.

  • Contribute to our design system. Consistency is a big part of usability, especially for a financial platform. We aim to leave the system better than we found it.

  • Document heavily. We’re an async, international team. Your Notion docs and Figma files should give anyone clear context, constraints, and options without a meeting.

  • Use AI throughout your workflow. Research, prototyping, and iteration. We expect designers to prototype with AI tools and bring working artifacts to the team.

  • Help raise the bar. Push forward and maintain a high design bar and level of execution.

  • Design for a diverse set of recipients, with accessibility and internationalization in mind.

  • Collaborative design. Work closely with PMs, Engineers, and others.

What you’ll bring

  • 8+ years of product design experience.

  • Experience at a startup or fast-moving product company.

  • A portfolio demonstrating functional, simple, and delightful user interfaces.

  • Proven experience building and improving design systems.

  • Excellent written communication and copywriting skills.

  • Experience using AI tools in your design workflow, including prototyping (v0, Claude, Cursor, or similar).

  • The ability to handle ambiguity. You’re comfortable conducting research and gathering information to make informed decisions on your own.

What’s cool about the role

  • Ship work you’ll be proud of.

  • Own design for a product area, end-to-end. You’ll help scope, drive, and measure your work, pushing forward user and business goals.

  • Become the champion for your users. You’ll conduct research and usability tests to gain a deep understanding of problems before designing solutions.

  • Competitive pay and equity. Base salary for this role: $200,000 – $265,000

  • Real benefits. 100% covered health (US), unlimited PTO, 12-16 weeks paid parental leave.

  • Fully remote. Work from anywhere in the Americas.

  • Great culture. Read more about how we work in our public handbook.
