Sample interview questions
I begin by identifying slow, flaky, or manual release steps and measuring their impact. I then prioritize automated unit, integration, and end-to-end coverage around critical workflows, add quality gates to the pipeline, and monitor build reliability and deployment lead time to validate improvement.
I define clear domain events, event ownership, and durable schemas before selecting services such as Lambda, EventBridge, SQS, or SNS. I design handlers to be idempotent, include retry and dead-letter queue strategies, apply least-privilege security, and use observability to trace failures across asynchronous workflows.
I assess the current application architecture, team expertise, maintainability, performance requirements, and integration cost. In an established product, I generally favor consistency with the existing stack unless a different technology provides a clear, measurable benefit that justifies migration or added complexity.
I use code review, input validation, secure authentication and authorization patterns, dependency scanning, secret management, and automated tests for failure paths. I also consider logging, error handling, rate limits, and least-privilege access early in design rather than treating security as a final review item.
I make mentorship part of normal delivery through constructive code reviews, pairing sessions, design discussions, and documented technical decisions. I tailor guidance to the engineer’s goals, encourage ownership rather than simply providing answers, and set clear priorities so mentoring supports team velocity.
