This Staff Software Engineer (SRE) role owns the reliability, scalability, security, and performance of Phantom's AWS-based production infrastructure. The engineer will operate Kubernetes on EKS, automate provisioning through Terraform or Pulumi, and improve observability with Datadog and OpenTelemetry. The role also supports blockchain node operations and database scaling for terabytes of multi-chain data. It requires close collaboration with backend and product teams in a high-growth, fully remote crypto environment.

I would deploy across multiple availability zones, use managed node groups with autoscaling, establish workload requests and limits, and implement pod disruption budgets and topology spread constraints. I would pair this with multi-AZ data services, ingress redundancy, tested backups, clear SLOs, and automated failover and recovery runbooks.
I would organize infrastructure into reusable, versioned modules or components, separate environments, and use remote state with locking and restricted access. Every change would pass formatting, validation, policy checks, security scanning, and plan review in CI before controlled deployment, with rollback procedures and drift detection in place.
I would monitor node synchronization lag, peer counts, RPC latency and error rates, block-processing delays, disk capacity and IOPS, memory and CPU saturation, and chain-specific divergence indicators. These signals should be correlated with service-level metrics, alert thresholds tied to user impact, and dashboards that distinguish a node-level fault from a broader chain or provider issue.
I would begin with workload profiling to identify query patterns, retention needs, indexing gaps, and hot partitions. Depending on access patterns, I would use partitioning, read replicas, caching, archival tiers, batch pipelines, and carefully managed schema or index changes, while validating improvements through load tests and capacity forecasts.
I start by identifying the user journey and selecting indicators such as successful request rate, latency, freshness, and availability. I set realistic targets and error budgets, instrument dashboards and alerts around them, then use incidents and error-budget consumption to prioritize reliability work alongside feature delivery.

Responsibilities
Kubernetes Ownership: Manage and scale Kubernetes clusters on AWS EKS, ensuring reliability, performance, and security.
Infrastructure Automation: Implement and maintain Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform/Pulumi) to automate infrastructure provisioning and management.
Performance Optimization: Monitor and optimize system performance, scalability, and resource utilization.
Blockchain Infrastructure: Configure and maintain crypto nodes across multiple blockchains to support our wallet’s operations.
Database Scaling: Optimize and scale database infrastructure to handle terabytes of blockchain data efficiently.
System Reliability: Continuously improve system uptime, monitoring, and observability using tools like Datadog and OpenTelemetry.
Collaboration: Work closely with backend and product teams to support feature development and system scaling.
Qualifications
8+ years in a SRE or Software Engineer role.
Strong hands-on experience with Kubernetes (EKS) in production environments.
Proficiency with AWS infrastructure and services (EC2, S3, RDS, IAM).
Solid experience with Docker and Infrastructure-as-Code tools like Terraform or Pulumi.
Monitoring and observability experience using tools like Datadog or OpenTelemetry.

The target base salary for this role will range between $200,000 to $250,000 with the addition of equity and benefits. This is determined by a few factors including your skillset, prior relevant experience, quality of interviews and market factors (such as location) at the point in time of offer.
