Sample interview questions
I would begin by gathering rack-density, growth, availability, network, and deployment-timeline requirements from hardware and infrastructure stakeholders. I would convert those inputs into modular power, cooling, white-space, and connectivity requirements, then evaluate phased build options that preserve expansion capacity while avoiding stranded capital. The final design would include clear capacity assumptions, redundancy targets, commissioning criteria, and operational handoff documentation.
I compare the options against rack power density, workload heat profile, water availability, maintainability, supply-chain maturity, cost, and time to deploy. Air cooling may suit lower-density or transitional environments, while direct-to-chip liquid cooling is often effective for modern GPU clusters with demanding thermal loads. I would select a solution through lifecycle cost analysis and operational risk review, ensuring it can scale with future hardware generations.
I would define the required availability tier and fault-tolerance objectives, then model utility paths, generators, UPS topology, switchgear, PDUs, and rack distribution against credible failure scenarios. I would incorporate maintainability, selective coordination, monitoring, and safe maintenance bypasses into the design. The approach would be validated through design reviews, failure-mode analysis, and integrated systems testing during commissioning.
I establish a documented decision-making process, design basis, responsibility matrix, and regular cross-functional review cadence at the start of the project. When conflicts arise, I use technical evidence, schedule impact, cost, code requirements, and operational consequences to frame options and drive a timely decision. I also maintain an auditable log of decisions and changes so all parties work from a single source of truth.
I would track PUE, WUE where relevant, capacity utilization, rack power density, cooling performance, commissioning defects, deployment lead time, availability events, and maintenance-related risk indicators. I would normalize metrics for climate and site constraints, identify recurring design or operational issues, and convert findings into standards, templates, and playbooks. This creates a feedback loop that improves reliability and speeds future deployments.

• Translate business, hardware, and workload requirements into facility design specifications (power, cooling, network, and floor space).
• Ensure designs optimize density, reliability, and efficiency while supporting rapid scalability.
• Coordinate with mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) engineers and consultants to deliver detailed designs.
Power & Cooling Strategy
• Define requirements for high-density rack power, redundancy and UPS configurations.
• Lead cooling design trade-offs (air, liquid, immersion) to meet GPU cluster needs.
• Evaluate and integrate renewable energy and sustainability initiatives.
Network & Infrastructure Integration
• Work closely with network and hardware teams to ensure physical layout supports cabling, interconnects, and future expansion.
• Plan for modular design that enables incremental GPU cluster growth.
Compliance & Standards
• Ensure all designs comply with international and regional standards (e.g., Uptime Institute Tier guidelines, local building codes).
• Incorporate safety, fire suppression, and physical security measures.
• Define documentation and as-built standards for ongoing operations.
