About this role.
Kong is seeking a senior, customer-facing Forward Deployed Engineer to implement and scale API and AI connectivity solutions for enterprise and public-sector customers. The role combines hands-on software engineering, platform architecture, migration delivery, automation, and technical consulting across cloud, hybrid, and on-premise environments. Responsibilities include deploying API and AI gateways, creating CI/CD and Kubernetes tooling, migrating legacy API-management platforms, and producing reusable delivery assets. Candidates need 8+ years of relevant engineering or professional-services experience, strong cloud-native and API expertise, and the ability to communicate with both engineering teams and executives.

Sample interview questions
I begin with discovery of existing traffic patterns, policies, dependencies, security controls, and service ownership. I create a phased migration plan with automated configuration conversion where possible, establish nonfunctional success criteria such as latency and error-rate thresholds, and use parallel testing or canary releases before cutover. After migration, I monitor production telemetry and document reusable patterns for subsequent teams.
I would use a declarative, GitOps-driven model with environment-specific configuration overlays, Helm or Kustomize packaging, policy controls, and automated validation in CI. The platform would include secure secret management, namespace and RBAC boundaries, observability, autoscaling, and a tested rollback process. I would also define self-service templates and governance guardrails so application teams can move quickly without bypassing standards.
I identify repetitive, error-prone steps and turn them into versioned, testable automation with clear inputs, outputs, and documentation. For example, I would build tooling to generate gateway configuration, validate policies, deploy through CI/CD, and run post-deployment smoke tests. I measure impact through reduced deployment time, fewer manual changes, improved consistency, and faster onboarding.
I clarify the desired business outcome, technical constraints, stakeholders, and measurable definition of done before proposing options. I communicate assumptions explicitly, deliver a small proof of value when uncertainty is high, and use findings to refine the implementation plan. This approach keeps the customer engaged while allowing technical decisions to progress without waiting for perfect information.
For engineering teams, I provide the impact, timeline, current hypothesis, mitigation steps, owners, and next diagnostic actions. For executives, I translate the issue into business impact, customer risk, recovery status, and expected next update without unnecessary implementation detail. In both cases, I maintain a consistent source of truth and conduct a blameless post-incident review with concrete prevention actions.
