About this role.
Supabase is hiring a senior Database Support Engineer to resolve complex developer-facing issues across PostgreSQL and the Supabase platform. The role combines advanced technical troubleshooting, query and database-performance expertise, customer communication, and close collaboration with engineering. Responsibilities include reproducing defects, identifying root causes, advising customers on architecture and workload optimization, and improving product documentation and tooling from ticket trends. This is a fully remote, full-time role for candidates residing in North or South American time zones, operating in a fast-paced asynchronous environment.

Sample interview questions
I would first confirm the growth rate and inspect replication slots, long-running transactions, archiving status, backups, and configured retention settings. I would use PostgreSQL system views such as pg_stat_activity and pg_replication_slots to identify retained WAL causes, then propose the safest remediation, such as resolving a stalled replica or slot, ending an inappropriate transaction, and monitoring recovery without risking data integrity.
I would gather the exact query, parameter patterns, schema and index changes, execution-plan output, table statistics, and representative data volume. I would reproduce the issue where possible, compare EXPLAIN ANALYZE plans before and after the change, check for stale statistics or missing indexes, and provide a validated recommendation such as an index adjustment, query rewrite, ANALYZE, or migration modification.
I start by asking targeted questions about expected versus actual behavior, timestamps, project identifiers, reproducible steps, error messages, relevant configuration, and impact. I then isolate the smallest reliable reproduction, document observed behavior and attempted workarounds, attach logs or traces with sensitive information removed, and clearly state the suspected component and customer impact for engineering.
I would first pause further writes or deployments if necessary, establish the current schema state, review the migration history, and take a backup before making corrective changes. I would compare the intended schema with the live environment, prepare an idempotent repair or rollback plan, test it in a representative environment, and verify data integrity and application behavior after deployment.
I acknowledge the impact promptly, state what is known, avoid unsupported conclusions, and provide the next diagnostic actions with a clear update cadence. I share safe mitigations as they become available, coordinate internally with engineering, and close with a concise explanation, resolution status, and preventive follow-up once the issue is understood.
About Supabase
Supabase is the Postgres development platform, built by developers for developers. We provide a complete backend solution including Database, Auth, Storage, Edge Functions, Realtime, and Vector Search. All services are deeply integrated and designed for growth.
About the Role
We’re looking for an experienced Database Support Engineer to join our Support Team and help developers unblock complex issues, build more reliably, and get the most out of the Supabase platform. You’ll work closely with customers and engineering, helping us improve product quality and developer experience based on real-world usage.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives in async, fast-paced environments and is excited about building developer tools that scale to millions.
What You’ll Be Responsible For
In this role, you’ll:
Investigate and resolve advanced customer issues across Postgres, Auth, RLS, Storage, Realtime, Edge Functions, and client libraries.
Provide consultative, proactive advice to optimize workloads, avoid common pitfalls, and offer tailored advice to our most advanced users.
Reproduce bugs, isolate root causes, propose workarounds, and escalate to engineering with solid reproduction steps.
Ask smart, targeted questions that turn incomplete reports into actionable cases.
Communicate clearly and empathetically with users of all levels—especially during high-impact or time-sensitive situations.
Spot patterns across tickets and recommend improvements to documentation, tooling, and the product itself.
Mentor junior team members and help raise the overall bar for support quality.
You Might Be a Good Fit If
Experience: You have 7+ years in technical support, databases, backend engineering, SRE, or a similar field.
Postgres Expertise: You know PostgreSQL deeply—autovacuum behavior, WAL growth, long-running transactions, table bloat, and other internals.
Performance: You’re strong in high-performance SQL and query optimization.
Troubleshooting: You’re comfortable troubleshooting complex setups, including multi-tenant schema patterns.
Distributed Systems: You can debug edge functions and understand distributed system behavior when failures get tricky.
Data Integrity: You’ve handled data migration issues (pg_dump/restore, schema drift, failed migrations) and know how to recover safely.
Cloud Infrastructure: You have hands-on experience with cloud hosting providers like AWS.
Technical Environment: You’re comfortable in terminal and Linux environments.
Mindset: You thrive in high-volume situations and can form/test assumptions quickly.
Timezones & Logistics
Role: Full-time position.
Location: Required residence in North or South American time zones (we do not believe in the sustainability of overnight shifts).
