Phantom is seeking a senior/staff-caliber backend engineer to build and evolve money-movement services and APIs connecting Phantom Cash to blockchain networks. The role emphasizes Node.js/NestJS, event-driven architecture, REST API design, distributed-systems reliability, and pragmatic product execution. The engineer will work in a fully remote environment, collaborate across pods, document decisions, mentor peers, and help maintain a high engineering bar. Crypto, fintech, wallet, payment-rail, and blockchain-integration experience—particularly with Solana or EVM ecosystems—is strongly preferred. The work supports a large-scale self-custodial, multi-chain wallet product where security, resilience, and user trust are central.

I would require an idempotency key scoped to the caller and operation, persist the key with a request fingerprint and terminal result, and return the stored result for matching retries. The processing path would use transactional state changes or an outbox pattern, clear error semantics for in-progress requests, and monitoring for duplicate or conflicting keys.
I would model events with immutable identifiers, chain or account ordering metadata, and explicit processing states. Consumers should be idempotent, retries should use bounded exponential backoff and dead-letter handling, and reconciliation jobs should compare internal records with on-chain state to address missed or reorganized events.
I focus on stable versioning, consistent resource models, pagination, validation, authentication, rate limits, and actionable error responses. I also consider payload size, caching, backward compatibility, mobile-network latency, and whether some state is better derived server-side rather than coordinated across clients.
I would first assess user impact through dashboards and error-rate alerts, then correlate traces, logs, queue depth, database performance, and upstream dependency health. After mitigating the immediate issue through rollback, throttling, scaling, or feature controls, I would document root cause and implement preventive tests, alerts, and resilience improvements.
I identify non-negotiable controls such as authorization boundaries, auditability, idempotency, secret management, and safe failure modes early in design. I then keep delivery moving through small releases, feature flags, automated testing, clear ownership, and risk-based reviews rather than waiting for unnecessary architectural perfection.

Responsibilities
Staff Backend Engineer who blends systems thinking with product pragmatism and a real passion for crypto. You’ll design, maintain, and evolve the backend services and APIs that connect Phantom Cash to blockchains. You understand both client-server architecture and blockchain protocols, and you know how to balance reliability, quality, and speed. You communicate clearly across pods, document rigorously, and elevate the engineering bar through execution and mentorship. Your work will make Phantom Cash feel dependable, seamless, and ready to scale.
Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Computer Science or related technical field or equivalent practical experience

Proactive and outcome-oriented: anticipates problems, pushes features to completion without waiting for perfect specs.
Strong communicator and pragmatic problem solver – explains complexity simply, favors progress over perfection.
Node.js / NestJS at scale; event-driven design (queues, retries, idempotency).
REST API architecture: versioning, pagination, error models, authentication, rate-limiting.
Full-stack awareness: understands trade-offs of state management (client vs server) and latency budgets.
Distributed-systems fundamentals: concurrency, ordering, retries, data consistency.
Nice to Have
Kubernetes + AWS ops; CI/CD; observability; on-call ownership.
Deep interest in crypto – keeps up with ecosystem changes, wallets, protocols, and security norms.
Previous hands-on experience in crypto or fintech (exchanges, wallets, payment rails, ledgers).
Smart-contract and protocol understanding: knows how on-chain programs interact with off-chain services.
Blockchain integration experience — Solana preferred, EVM acceptable.
Has shipped high-quality products in mature, high-bar engineering organizations.
