The role, at a glance.
Amplitude is hiring a senior player-coach Head of Product Design to lead and develop a 15-person design organization while remaining deeply involved in complex product and UX work. The role owns design strategy and craft quality across Core Amplitude, Statsig, and Wave, with a particular focus on coherent AI-native workflows. The leader will support autonomous product pods, establish effective structure in a high-growth environment, and advocate for customer needs in executive discussions. Success requires proven people leadership, exceptional visual and systems design judgment, experience shipping metric-driving products, and hands-on AI product experience.

Sample interview questions
I set explicit principles for quality and decision-making, then use regular critique, one-on-ones, and targeted pairing to help designers apply them independently. I focus feedback on the customer problem, product rationale, and craft details so the team gains judgment rather than waiting for approval.
I would describe the user problem, the role the AI played in the workflow, the safeguards and transparency designed into the interaction, and the outcome measured after launch. A strong lesson is that AI should reduce cognitive work while preserving user control, clear expectations, and easy recovery from incorrect outputs.
I would establish a shared product and design direction, reusable system patterns, clear quality criteria, and lightweight review points for high-impact decisions. Designers would retain ownership within pods, while I would intervene directly on cross-product experience issues, foundational patterns, and the highest-risk customer journeys.
I would connect metrics to the intended customer outcome, such as activation, task completion, feature adoption, experiment success, retention, support-contact reduction, and qualitative usability findings. I would also track experience consistency and accessibility indicators where appropriate, pairing behavioral data with customer feedback.
I begin by aligning on the customer problem, constraints, and success measures rather than defending a preferred solution. I use evidence from research, product data, prototypes, and engineering tradeoffs to frame options, make the decision owner clear, and commit to testing the outcome when uncertainty remains.

As an organization, we deliver for our customers by living our values. We operate from a place of humility, take ownership of problems and successes, approach challenges with a growth mindset, and put our customers at the center of everything we do.
Amplitude is moving fast, from product analytics to an AI-native platform with agents embedded across the product, used by over 4,700 companies. We are looking for a strong design leader with a builder mindset to lead a 15-person design team through the next phase of growth.
This is a player-coach role. You manage and grow the team. You also stay in the actual work: elevating quality through feedback, pairing with designers on the hardest UX puzzles, and asking the right questions to unlock the crux of the problem. You’ll know every product surface well enough to raise its quality — even if you don’t own any single one end-to-end.
Designers are embedded in autonomous pods and need to keep shipping fast. Maintaining speed without compromising on coherence and quality is the job. If that tension sounds like an exciting problem to solve rather than a contradiction to complain about, keep reading.
What you’ll do
Build the team. Hire, grow, and retain a high-performing design team, identifying people who will thrive and raise the bar at Amplitude. Develop them through direct, specific feedback. Help someone who’s stuck get moving again.
Set direction. Drive the design strategy for Amplitude’s product suite: Core Amplitude, Statsig, and Wave (a proactive agent that helps teams build self-improving products). Help define how agents and humans work together in the same workflows.
Champion craft. Strong visual design builds trust, clarity, and delight in the era of AI. Lead by example, elevating the quality of the product through exceptional design execution.
Hold a high bar. AI makes it cheap to ship UI changes, which makes it easy for quality to erode quietly. Set a clear standard for what good looks like and enforce it without becoming an approval bottleneck.
Stay in production. You believe that “the design” is what ships. Code is the material that brings the design to life. Push on the details, the papercuts, the edge cases.
Speak for the customer. Show up in leadership conversations as the voice of the customer, pushing for solutions that genuinely serve their needs and reduce complexity.
What we’re looking for
You’ve managed senior, independent IC designers and earned their respect through product and craft judgment.
You’ve shipped products that moved real customer and business metrics, fast.
You’ve created (not inherited) structure inside of a messy, high-growth organization.
You’ve shipped AI-native experiences and use AI tools in your own practice today (we’ll ask what you built and what you learned).
Your portfolio shows both systems-level thinking and pixel-level craft.
Bonus: You’ve designed for both technical and non-technical users, and can hold that tension without compromising the experience for either.
Bonus: Experience with Analytics, Experimentation, or Developer tools.
What this is not
Not an executive role that manages up and delegates down. You’re deep in the work.
Not a pure IC role. You’re accountable for a team of 15.
Not design ops. Your job isn’t to add rituals, templates, or governance.
Not the approval committee. Pods keep moving; you create coherence without becoming the bottleneck.
