Sample interview questions
I would begin with a versioned canonical model grounded in established standards such as FHIR, LOINC, and RxNorm, while preserving source provenance and raw data for auditability. I would establish a configurable mapping and validation layer, define data-quality contracts, and measure completeness, timeliness, conformance, and reconciliation outcomes. The model would evolve through governed schema changes, clear ownership, and feedback from downstream clinical and analytics users.
I would track ingestion latency and freshness, throughput, successful-load rate, schema and mapping failure rate, data completeness, duplicate rates, reconciliation accuracy, and incident recovery time. I would segment these measures by customer, source system, and dataset so the team can identify systemic versus customer-specific issues. I would also connect platform metrics to business outcomes such as time to customer readiness and downstream clinical-data coverage.
I would turn the onboarding process into a standardized, instrumented playbook with reusable connectors, source-assessment templates, mapping configurations, automated validation, and formal readiness gates. Each customer implementation would retain appropriate controls for PHI access, audit logging, encryption, and least-privilege access. I would use onboarding retrospectives and operational metrics to continuously reduce manual work and improve time to production.
I make tradeoffs explicit by maintaining a transparent portfolio of roadmap work, reliability investments, and debt reduction tied to customer and business risk. The team should reserve capacity for operational improvements, establish service-level objectives, and use incident learnings to prioritize systemic fixes. I communicate the cost of deferral in clear business terms so stakeholders can make informed decisions rather than treating technical debt as invisible work.
I would start with approved tools, clear usage policies, and a risk-based rollout that prevents sensitive data from being exposed to unapproved systems. AI outputs would remain subject to code review, automated testing, dependency scanning, security checks, and documented engineering standards. I would measure adoption through developer productivity, defect rates, deployment performance, and security findings, then expand practices that demonstrably improve delivery without weakening controls.
About this role.
At Counterpart Health, we are transforming healthcare and improving patient care with our innovative primary care tool, Counterpart Assistant. By supporting Primary Care Physicians (PCPs), we are able to deliver improved outcomes to our patients at a lower cost through early diagnosis and longitudinal care management of chronic conditions.
We’re looking for a Director of Engineering to lead our Data Products pillar, serving as the technical engine for Counterpart Health’s (CPH) clinical-data foundation. You will own the technical strategy and execution for the Data Products roadmap—encompassing clinical data ingestion, canonical data modeling, and ingestion scalability—while building scalable, reusable data capabilities that serve as a foundational platform for driving clinical insight generation. You will own the technical strategy for our Data Products platform—ensuring our clinical data foundations (using standards like FHIR, LOINC, and RxNorm) effectively drive business outcomes. You will serve as a critical leader and partner to the VP of Engineering and cross-functional leaders in Product, Data Science, and Design.
As a Director of Engineering, Data Products, you will:
- Own the Data Products technical roadmap, canonical data modeling, and ingestion scalability.
- Manage and optimize the clinical data ingestion pipeline.
- Oversee the scaling of customer data onboarding processes and the continuous improvement of data hygiene, canonical storage standards, and observability and monitoring of the data pipelines.
- Enable shared funnel visibility across the organization and support the development of a robust enterprise reporting framework.
- Drive the adoption of an AI-powered Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), leveraging AI tools to accelerate coding, testing, and deployment processes while maintaining stringent code quality and security standards.
Success in this role looks like:
- Successfully achieving improved clinical data coverage and freshness targets across all patient populations.
- Predictable and repeatable multi-customer scaling with standardized playbooks for rapid data readiness.
- Broad adoption of the Data Products platform and its capabilities
- Data infrastructure is robust, stable, and serves as a reliable source of truth during rapid organizational growth and customer expansion.
You should get in touch if:
- You possess 10+ years of engineering experience with a deep focus on building high-scale data platforms, distributed systems, and interoperability standards (e.g., FHIR, CCDA).
- Proven track record in managing and scaling engineering teams that handle data-heavy workloads and complex clinical data pipelines.
- Proven experience leading cross-functional teams of engineers to deliver complex software in regulated environments.
- Experience implementing and scaling AI-assisted development workflows (e.g., AI code assistants, automated testing, or AI-driven SDLC) to improve engineering productivity.
- Demonstrated experience building and managing engineering systems in highly regulated healthcare environments, with a strong operational understanding of HIPAA and SOC 2 compliance requirements.
- Passionate about the healthcare sector and committed to utilizing technical expertise to drive meaningful improvements in patient outcomes.
- Deeply familiar with the inherent complexities and lack of standardization in clinical datasets, with a proactive focus on enhancing data integrity.
- Motivated by intricate technical challenges and dedicated to architecting pragmatic, high-quality engineering solutions through continuous intellectual exploration.
