Core skills

Skills and capabilities most closely associated with this opportunity.

Sample interview questions
How would you assess a new student's readiness for AMC 8 or AMC 10 preparation?

I would begin with a short diagnostic covering core topics such as algebra, number theory, geometry, counting, and probability. I would also ask the student to explain their reasoning so I can identify conceptual gaps, not just incorrect answers. I would use the results to set specific learning goals and create a targeted lesson plan.

How do you explain a difficult competition-math problem to a student who is stuck?

I first ask the student to describe what they have tried and identify the exact point of confusion. Then I break the problem into smaller observations, use guiding questions rather than immediately giving the solution, and connect the method to a reusable strategy. I finish by having the student solve a similar problem independently.

What strategies would you teach for time management during an AMC exam?

I would encourage students to make an initial pass through the test, solving high-confidence questions first and marking time-intensive problems for later. We would practice estimating, eliminating answer choices, checking work efficiently, and recognizing when to move on. Timed practice sessions and post-test reflection would help make these habits consistent.

How would you keep an online one-on-one math lesson engaging?

I would use an interactive digital whiteboard, frequent check-in questions, and a mix of guided examples and independent student work. I would vary problem difficulty to maintain momentum and relate strategies across different problem types. Clear goals at the start and a short recap at the end would reinforce progress.

How do you provide feedback that improves both performance and confidence?

I provide feedback promptly and specifically, distinguishing between a misunderstanding, a calculation mistake, and an inefficient approach. I highlight what the student did well before identifying the next skill to practice, then give an actionable exercise or strategy. This keeps feedback constructive while helping students see measurable improvement.
