Sample interview questions
How would you help a learner who understands A/B testing theory but cannot determine the right success metric for a product experiment?

I would start by clarifying the product objective, target user behavior, and decision the team needs to make. Then I would help the learner distinguish between a primary metric, guardrail metrics, and diagnostic metrics, ensuring the primary metric is measurable, sensitive to the intervention, and aligned with user and business value. I would use a concrete example and ask the learner to justify their final metric selection.

Describe how you would facilitate an effective weekly virtual office hour for learners with different levels of technical knowledge.

I would set a clear agenda, collect questions in advance, and group related topics so the session remains structured. I would explain core concepts first, then work through practical examples while inviting participation from both newer and more advanced learners. Afterward, I would share key takeaways and relevant resources so learners who could not attend can still benefit.

How would you explain the difference between correlation and causation to a product management learner?

I would explain that correlation shows two variables move together, while causation means changing one variable directly produces a change in the other. For example, users who receive more notifications may be more engaged, but that does not prove notifications caused engagement because highly engaged users may simply opt into more notifications. I would explain that a controlled experiment can help isolate causal impact.

A learner has written a SQL query that returns duplicate records after joining two tables. How would you mentor them?

I would ask them to inspect the grain of each table and identify the join keys and their cardinality. I would explain that duplicates commonly arise from one-to-many or many-to-many joins, then help them validate counts before and after the join. Depending on the intended output, I would guide them toward aggregation, deduplication, or selecting a more appropriate join condition.

When should a mentor escalate an issue to Mentor Operations rather than resolve it independently?

I would resolve standard course-content questions and technical learning blockers directly whenever possible. I would escalate issues involving platform access, policy concerns, learner conduct, repeated unresolved blockers, or requests outside the mentor’s authority. In an escalation, I would provide concise context, actions already taken, and the learner’s specific need so the operations team can respond efficiently.
