Sample interview questions
How would you get up to speed on Navan’s brand during a short freelance engagement?

I would begin with a focused review of the brand guidelines, existing campaign work, audience segments, performance insights, and stakeholder expectations. I would then identify any immediate consistency gaps, establish an efficient review process, and create reusable components or templates where appropriate so the team can move quickly without diluting the brand.

Tell us about a time you evolved a visual identity while preserving brand recognition.

In a previous role, I refreshed a mature visual system by retaining its recognizable core elements while introducing a more flexible typographic hierarchy, updated color usage, and modular illustration principles. I documented the changes in practical guidelines and piloted them in high-visibility campaigns before broader rollout, which improved consistency and stakeholder adoption.

How do you prioritize multiple design requests with competing deadlines?

I assess each request by business impact, audience reach, launch dependency, effort, and deadline risk. I make tradeoffs visible early, align with requesters on the minimum viable deliverable versus a fully developed asset, and maintain a clear production plan with review milestones.

How do you explain and defend a design decision to non-design stakeholders?

I connect design choices to the brief, audience needs, and intended outcome rather than relying on personal preference. I use clear comparisons, hierarchy and accessibility principles, and—when available—performance data to explain why a direction will communicate more effectively.

What is your approach to designing assets for both digital and print channels?

I start with the shared concept and core visual system, then adapt execution to each medium’s technical and audience requirements. For digital, I account for responsive formats, readability, and interaction context; for print, I consider production specifications, color management, resolution, bleed, and physical viewing distance.
